Lorraine Newman's Plans...

I think EastEnders is about to get very good again over the next few weeks but can Lorraine Newman and her team produce another golden era?

could we see the likes of Grant (Ross Kemp) and David (Michael French) return to Walford permanently?

Lorraine has said she has no plans to bring anybody back or cast any new faces until 2013.

of course the show will see the return of Bianca, Carol and Dot later this year and Janine and Tanya will be back after their breaks...

Bringing back old characters wouldn't help bring in 'another golden era'' more like the same old era again and again, if she has any sense she'll move forward.

But I think to make a new golden era, they need a mix of old and new. She needs to make a new family with no relations to the anybody in the square.

Exactly. Things need to move forward and she needs to create characters that will be a long-standing addition to the show.

I agree there needs to be a mix of old and new but at the moment, the show has more than it's fair share of older characters, with Sharon's return only adding to that. Bring back even more old characters like Grant or Peggy and the show will just feel like the past being recycled. The producers should be thinking about what to do with Denise rather than putting most of their eggs in one basket - the past one.

I totally agree on Denise, great actress is Di Parish and Denise needs a meaty storyline...

a new family is certainly needed too.

John Yorke commented that Lorraine has steered the show for 1 of the most exciting autums he can remember but so far its not been terribly exciting.

Agreed. The show really needs to make use of the characters they already have and get rid of the ones that don't work (Derek, Tyler, Jack, Kat etc) and concentrate on making the show work as it is. Half of the characters are so unlikeable, storylines are not character driven and we get awful returns like Sharon - could've been so much better if they didn't make her one of the Brannings.

Relying on the past just shows lack of imagination. Why not give Denise something to do? Such great, likeable, funny character played by a fantastic actress who no doubt could do well if they used her right.
