A selection of the photos on my partners camera roll have vanished to be replaced by a grey box saying "jpeg" or "png"

Why would that happen?

photos are corrupt

So how does that suddenly happen when they've been there ages?
Can they be recovered?

Plug the phone into a computer and check them via mass storage.
