Charlie Stubbs will attack Rovers Return head barmaid Shelly Unwin in a bitter row at New Year. In the episode, Shelly will be seen sporting some new earrings that Charlie has bought her, and telling all in sundry how much she loves him.

However, it will all turn sour when they end up rowing hours later, Charlie will be seen grabbing Charlie and pulling her earrings out, leaving Shelly bleeding and in tears, fearing more violence.

Up to now the abuse has only been mental but all changes when Charlie pulls the diamonds from her ears. Shelly hopes it will blow over, but will soon find out its only the tip of the iceberg.

So Christmas is not going to be merry, and it doesn't sound it will be a very happy new year in Corrie this year.

Oh Shelly Shelly Shelly! - Open your eyes girlie - there's still time before Christmas! They're doing the storyline well, the evil, devious manipulation and verbal games to start with, chipping away at her and making her feel guilty like everything's her fault. I find it hard to watch, but I will, if only to hope that they eventually let Shelly have her day. I want her to do the Mo - "You can't hurt me anymore speech!" and we can all cheer. My goodness though, she does pick -em!

Yes, it has echoes of the tragic Little Mo storyline doesnt it? I don't watch Eastenders and thankfully have never been a victim of domestic violence but I suppose its a difficult storyline to do. I have noticed though that it does sometimes have a constructive outcome in that they use it to highlight serious issues like this that will hopefully encourage people who experience such traumas to report it and try and get out of the situation ie via helplines etc.

Thing is little Mo knew she was being abused - at the minute I think Shelly is blissfully unaware of anything that is going on around her!

Obviously she will know soon...surely though as soon as Charlie did that Shelly would throw him out straight away...

I'm sure if we go back far enough we'll find that Trevor and Mo weren't the first domestic abuse storyline in soaps. All soaps re-cycle storylines. Even Eastenders.

I'm sure Ken Barlow has smacked Dreary before!

I heard on the radio and posted here several weeks ago that this would turn into a domestic violence storyline, but again everyone said it would just be mental abuse and nothing more.

I am almost disappointed they're moving this story in the direction of physical violence. I have no doubt that Coronation Street will handle the storyline skilfully but i feel they've missed an opportunity to show the extent which mental and psychological abuse can affect a victim. Somehow (for me), that Charlie could control and damage Shelley without resorting to using his fists is more shocking. Verbal/psychological abuse doesn't always lead to the physical and in some ways is harder to extricate oneself from. for many victims/survivors, the shock of being physically struck can be a wake up call. I can't help feeling that the message is being given that although mental abuse is bad, physical is worse - when i don't think they're comparable or interchangeable.
However, in saying all of that, I'm certain that the story will be handled sensitively and will be both well written and well acted

Well it sounds good, but I'm afraid I find it very hard to feel any sympathy for Shelley whatsoever. She's turned into a pathetic, unlikeable cow and after Peter Barlow I find it VERY hard to believe she could be so easily taken in, by someone a thousand times worse, who is actually showing obvious selfish and devious characteristics - and this is before the abuse!
It's just a bit absurd, I can't take Shelley as a victim seriously. IF they had kept it to mental abuse (there are ways of doing that and still keeping it very interesting), then I might just believe it, but somethnig like this would normally be a wake-up call...

I agree Lippincote. Although I don't really mind the spoilers, but it is annoying for those that do. Always better to write Corrie Spoiler, or something like that, in the title so as not to give it away!

Well thats what I was lead to believe, but surely after a while it would turn physical. Trevor mentally abused Little Mo for ages before he actually hit her. And then after that it got very nasty and he raped her.

Shelley will think this was a one off, but she will soon find its nothing compared to what lies ahead.

I agree with a comment made earlier, if someone like Shelley who had suffered a guy like Peter Barlow, would she after going through that, suffer a guy who is a hundered more more obvious than Peter Barlow and not do something or not think right this guy is a pig, get rid of him. In saying that she was going to take Peter Barlow back until that other girl decided it would be nice to get her own back by pretending she wanted him, so he dumped Shelley in the end.

And whats worse is that she endures a lot more than earrings being torn from her ears. I wonder what will finally make her see sense.
