If I install the modified firmware it is easy enough to go back to the humax firmware if needed to (ie return to supplier)

Yes it is.

Unless the reason for returning the box is because it has been bricked for some reason.

But in that case neither you nor they will be in a position to check nor change what firmware is installed.
