All Saints, with their classier lyrics, Shaznay is a great songwriter. Spice Girls weren't all that bad, I liked Mama, 2 Become 1 and Viva Forever.

All Saints did kill off the Spice Girls abit on Black Coffee.
Plus there were around 3 years before The Spices. |

I really like both;
All Saints - Pure Shores, Black Coffee, Never Ever Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are?, Say You'll Be There |

Loved all saints .Although them bringing those awful baggy combats in fashion wasn't great!
I still listen to one of their albums now ..which is probably very sad but I like it

Spice Girls were for kids really. All Saints were a proper pop group.

the spice girls were a bigger commercial success, but all saints had 'better' or more mature material, i prefer all saints. |

I liked All Saints music over their personalities, and I liked The Spice Girls personalities over their music... so this is a toughie...
I think The Spice Girls were the better girl band. When you factor in the fact that All Saints had only 10 singles, one of which was a souble A-side of covers, and I couldn't actually tell you how War of Nerves, All Hooked Up or Black Coffee sound, the Spice Girls outshine them. All The Spice Girls songs are instantly recognisable really. EDIT: Just listened to Black Coffee, I recognise it now, but I can't sing along to it. |

All Saints
The Spice girls were and an embarrassment to Pop music and for British Music. Whether they sold millions of record or not, 4/5 of them couldn't sing and i couldn't help but cringe watching a bunch of late 30 year old's trying to dance and sing. The only one i have up most respect for is Mel C. All saints were not your typical girlband. They were a bit edgy and did their own thing. They were not a product, not in your face and their songs were quite lyrically good. I liked them and their music still sounds fresh when i hear them on the radio or in shops. It's a shame they never lasted long but oh well. |

BOTH!!! best girlbands ever tbh!
Spice girls are and were a pop cultural phenomenon Spice and Spiceworld are corker albums and really loved geri and Mel Cs solo album debuts too! Ironically Mel C and All Saints also worked with William Orbit writer and producer on their late 90s works....hmmmmm But either way, they are brilliant but if i had to choose i would have to say Spice Up My Life!!!! |

I was fortunate through work to see them very early on in their career when they were known as 'All Saints 1975'..they were only in their teens but they were great, they sang live in a small setting, they had no technical enhancements, but were in perfect harmony..they wrote all or most their own stuff, which was slightly more thoughtful than 'ziga zag ahh'....probably one of the best british girl groups ever...Can I forgive them for their ridiculous cover of Under The Bridge tho'...No, not really. Give me a hundred All Saints over the The Spice Girls anyday whose music (or rather the music that was given to them) was throwaway pop and cynically aimed directly at very young girls who bought into the 'girl power' myth. |

Add me to the All Saints list.
Black Coffee is 4 minutes and 45 seconds of sonic bliss. |

Pure Shores is still one of my all-time favourite songs and that whole second-wave era vibe from them was amazing. Some truly brilliant tracks.
Spice Girls were fun, poppy, loud and in your face. They were a brand and they did their jobs (sell billions of everything) brilliantly. Seeing as I'm more about music than merch, it's All Saints all the way for me. |

![]() Why Spice Girls v All Saints..? Eternal was just before any of them showing that girl bands could be big like all the boy bands around that time. Both of them broke through largely due to Eternal showing the way. |

You have a point there, Mevil. I think Eternal definitely paved the way for All Saints in particular.
