Some boy bands don't even bother harmonising and all just sing the line the same way so it just sounds like a couple of boys on karaoke but girl bands like little mix are expected to have good harmonies. Shouldn't they use the fact they have more than one voice available to their advantage so they sound different to solo artists? If they harmonised they could get more respect as singers.

As the saying goes, you cannoty polish a turd. What gives you the idea any of these creations could even dream of harmonising?

With boy bands for example like 1D, their main selling point is their looks but sometimes they do harmonise.

Because they lack a standard. R&B groups always harmonised, there was a standard. Everyone did that. Pop bands are rarely about talent so...they don't bother. Because their fanbase don't care, as their sales prove.

This pretty much.
Why would the likes of 1D bother about credibility or showing any talent when all they have to do is show up? It does though make you despair when you think about acts down the years that relied on their vocal harmonies, talent and songs to get by...The Four Tops, The Delfonics, The Temptations, Archie Bell, Tramps etc etc

Take That,Blue,Backstreet Boys and N SYNC always did. I think the change started with McFly and Busted who were more guitar orientated as opposed to vocal. Now this generation is no dancing, no harmonies and no effort.
1D and The Wanted being the biggest for this especially. At least JLS still put some kind of stage performance on. TW and 1D especially have no stage presence at all.

Agree. And if you can carry a tune your are 'boring'! Not cool enough.

Exactly. Those mini legends there had to work so hard to even get attention from a label.

They do there but in the wonder wall cover they sing it like 5 solo artists singing together instead of a harmonising group.

It's probably because they had no preparation and they weren't taking it seriously, it was just for fun.

Aw ok I thought they planned it. That's fair enough it takes time to plan performances properly.

Correct answer: Because they are cute, so their fans won't care about what they sing.

So, do I get full points for this pop quiz?

I can't hear any harmonies, plus they have the whole audience harmonising for them

The only good one was Liam, I don't understand how that curly haired boy gets most lines, someone needs to tell him that shouting the notes out is not what we call singing.

Liam is most consistent, Harry is hit or miss really in live situations, he needs to work on that.

This is them 'non-rehearsed/without backing' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qURqqrfCo9c

It annoys me when pop acts sing over backing track (not actually miming, just singing over the recorded version), The Saturdays do it too, when they are actually capable of singing live in tune. It may not be an amazing live vocal...but at least it will be live.

But having said that The Sats do acoustic performances such as Live Lounge.

I agree with the main points in this thread....boybands don't really need to especially with their main target audience, but they should at least attempt.

Ed Sheeran harmonizes better than 1D with his loop pedal. Pathetic on their part tbh.
