This a coke Vs pepsi question really, but if I had to pick I'd say Marvel. Not because they are better but because they are the characters I was most familiar with as a child, particularly thanks to the 80's Spider-man cartoon and later the early 90's X-Men cartoon.

I also liked the early 90's Batman animated cartoon, but its was Spider-Man and the X-men that initially pulled me into a comic book store (off the back of those cartoons) and hence, those were the titles I read from the age of about 10 onwards.

Marvel's back-continuity is the one I'm most familiar with and today I read about 8-10 Marvel titles a month, whereas DC I read about 4-5 a month.

I have to say though, if I were to call it right now in 2012 - I'd say DC are actually the ones putting out the better comics at the moment. New 52 was a brave move and it certainly allowed me to start reading titles that I've never read before (like Green Lantern). Things feel slick, fresh and not over-saturated. I know there are multiple Batman titles for example, but I've chosen to read the Scott Snyder title (Batman) only, and I don't feel I've missed anything whatsoever by ignoring the other bat-titles. Good luck trying that with Avengers or X-Men.

I was a DC fan because back in the early sixties when Thorpe & Porter imported them Marvel ran serials and there was no guarantee you would get the next issue while DC were complete stories. Also DC had some marvelous artists such as Carmine Infantino, Murphy Anderson, Gil Kane, and Kurt Swan. At Marvel except for Steve Ditko everybody else had to draw like Jack Kirby partly because he started off most of the new comics and others took over. The T&P imports, by ship, were cheaper than in america but I had a real shock in the sixties when I discovered Forbidden Planet in Berwick St Soho to discover the T&P comics were six months old and that american comics came out three months before the cover date because distribution in america was so poor. I used to read 20 comics a month, 14 DC 6 Marvel Batman was my favourite until the 1960's TV show ruined it for quite a few years. I liked Daredevil at Marvel because it seemed so original.

For Batman, Dream, Constantine, Preacher and Etrigan, forever DC.

I think - with some exceptions - Marvel has the better creative teams (writers and artists) and they're more consistent. DC is much more patchy and doesn't reach the same level as Marvel as often...

...having said that, DC have the two most iconic characters in comics (Superman and Batman) and have produced (in my opinion) the two greatest books in comics history - Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.
