Just been thinking about this "stuff you would hear down the pub" comment. Sometimes the "stuff you would hear down the pub" is more entertaining than the sort of "stuff" a professional comedian might say because it's about everyday things that people can identify with. Imagine a comedian telling you what a bind it is when the butler doesn't turn in for work and you have to answer the door yourself. That's why the audience turned on Al Reid who gave his man of the people act when in reality he was quite well-to-do. We don't want our comedians too removed from the way we live else how can we find anything they say funny? That's why Billy Connolly was so successful too when he talked about the shipyards and having to clock out at a certain time and not before (being in a job where every second is monitored myself I can still see the funny side).

Those that prefer his Phoenix NIghts stuff can see his early pilot for Channel 4 in the early hours of Friday morning (00.15 hours). It's called The Services and was made before his That Peter Kay thing series which first introduced us to Brian Potter. He plays several characters at a motorway service station

Where do you get the idea that "the audience turned on Al Read", unless there really is an Al reid, of course?

He was one of the most popular comedians of his day, with audiences of up to 35 million. He was a sausage maker, though admittedly the business was his father's.

Thanks, though, for prompting me about who peter kay reminds me of.

I like both but I do prefer sitcoms so thanks for the heads up. Hopefully it'll be available on 4 on demand once it's been aired.

There was a documentary on the radio last year I think.

No probs. Tom O'Connor was in the same mould. Shades of Al Reid in Tom O'Connor's material too.

I went to the see the show, purchased the DVD and waited all the way through for the part with the cassette.

It isn't on the DVD though - but it was on channel 4???!? does anyone know why?

I LOVED the mickey-take of Peter Kay that Vic and Bob did on Shooting Stars.

Youtube link here, for anyone who's interested.
I've given Peter Kay several tries. I keep hoping I'll see what other people see, but once again, I didn't.

That YouTube clip is fairly close to my opinion of Peter Kay's act. 20 years earlier, Alexi Sayle used to do a mock comedy sketch that started "Do you remember Spangles?".

It must be a well known (lazy) option in the comedy circuit to build an act on just asking the audience if they remember stuff. I know observational humor is a big thing, but there do need to be punchlines too!

I can only think it's a copyright issue with the music, which affects it being on the DVD, but not channel 4 broadcasting it. Like I said in an earlier post, I'm waiting for the repeat - I'm sure it'll be on Christmas if not before then.

Rights reasons, I think.

Wish I'd heard that; he really was a brilliant comedian. One of those who went into comedy after having a real job, like Kenneth Horne and, my favourite, Bobby Thompson.

I've just watched this and found it so funny! This is by far one of his best DVDs, unless anyone would like to recommend otherwise?

Also possible that because it was used on a previous DVD he didn't want it repeated on another. Quite laughable reason though given his act

Was it though?, I've read about the routine in his autobiography, but it definitely wasn't on the Blackpool Tower video/DVD.

I was listening to Live from Bolton earlier today. Long time since I've heard it but still as funny especially when he's voicing the part of older women with the garly throat (Phyllis Pearce style if you know who Phyllis Pearce was). I was about to have a drink of water at the time and thought better of it! Live from Blackpool Tower and Manchester I seem to remember were worth a second viewing too - well I must have thought so at the time as I bought those too.
