Ammonia still stable, no nitrites yet but it's only been a few days
Water still cloudy but I think it's better than it was...

I can't advise you on this but I've been following your thread and I really hope you get it sorted. You deserve it after all the effort you're putting in.

I have uploaded a couple of pictures of the tank. Typically the photos make the cloudiness look less than it is! But I think it's definitely better than it was. Sadly I didn't take a picture when the bloom first happened.

I've seen worse cloudiness than that and you say it look better than it did so that's all good
![]() Patience is the key, did you say you had added some filter media from your existing tank? |

Every little bit helps, hopefully you should start to get a nitrite reading soon.

Happy to say the cloudiness looks even better today
I'm a bit worried about when I have to do a major water change after the cycle though that it will happen again, as when I fully changed the water last time I got a bloom again.

But, this time when you do the big water change you'll have a fully cycled filter which should alleviate cloudy water problems. I say 'should' rather than 'will' because nothing can be 100% guaranteed. Fingers crossed for you though.
I had terrible cloudiness with my little Fluval Edge. I'd given it a filter squeeze from my big tanks and, because at the time I had no ammonia just kept it going with fish food flakes. It looked vile until I did the big change before I put my betta in there. I had also done a change before the filter had become cycled and it did go cloudy again, but once the filter was cycled the cloudiness never came back and to this day it remains crystal clear. http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/...FluvalEdge.jpg I forgot to say, you've got a nice little tank there

Thank you that's very reassuring
I can't wait to get my goldfish in there...just wish I was further into my cycle than a week! And thanks! Very amateur compared to yours though

My family now think I'm bonkers. We're getting new carpet fitted and so the fish tank would need to be moved but it's too heavy, and I refuse to take any water out or it will disrupt the cycle! So my room has to wait til I'm done!

Cor after all this I don't blame you! Got my fingers crossed you get there in the end. Really looking forward to seeing a piccy of a happy fishy in his/her new tank.

I feel like he's become really subdued/not entirely happy in the tank he's in- spending a lot of time hovering in this 1 particular place that he didn't before. It's not an ideal situation but while I'm cycling the new 1 I don't have any other option of where to put him! I've tested the water and ammonia and nitrites are 0, I tested KH levels and they were really low but brought them back up again with minerals and that's now fine. He's spending a little too much time at the top of the tank for my liking as well, not gasping for air or anything like that but just casually swimming around the top and eating some of the small air bubbles.

Have you thought about putting the filter from your old tank in to the new one and running it alongside the new filter? It's actually the filter you are cycling rather than the tank. I don't know why this didn't occur to me sooner. As yo are sticking with the fish you've got the bio-load will be exactly the same.

But surely as he's in the small tank he needs the filter still?
![]() Just keep an eye on your water for the first week or so.

You can move the fish over at the same time
Just keep an eye on your water for the first week or so. I'm doing a fishless cycle so the tank is dosed up with ammonia, so can't move the fish in, unless I've missed your point haha?!

The filter he already has will already be dosed up with the good bacteria you're growing in your new filter. If you move the fish over to the new tank with the old filter, you're moving the good bacteria over as well. If you run the two filters side by side, the new filter will eventually grow the good bacteria as well, or you can just leave both running - over filtering is better with goldfish, the messy devils
![]() Edit, I have just realised a problem. The way the already cycled filter sits would mean I can't get the lid on the tank :/ http://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/...4/5c6e6f20.jpg |

Oooo OK, so do you suggest I do a big water change to get rid of the ammonia (obviously as it's currently at 5ppm), and then move them both over? I think he would be a lot happier in this tank, and as long as I keep an eye on the water conditions closely and do changes when necessary, he should be fine?

It's the bacteria you want to transfer. Make sure your ammonia and nitrites are 0 before moving your fish over, nitrates want to be at a reasonable level too, this should all be achieved by the massive water change - not forgetting the de-chlorinator of course.. I know he's a cold water fish but do make sure the new water reaches the same temp as the water in his old tank before moving him as well as the water from the tap will be way colder than his tank water. If he's looking distressed in the old tank you should try to move him ASAP. |

I think I will do the big water change, let the cycled filter run in it overnight, test the water and then if all good put him in? I don't have a nitrate test kit yet but one is on its way so I can keep an eye on that too. |

So literally just put the sponge somewhere in the new filter? It's a poky little sponge, so seems weird putting that in the big new filter and thinking it will do the job! But like you say, it's the same fish so shouldn't be any different to the tank he's in now.
