Same as yesterday. I've literally done everything I can. I asked on a specialised fish forum about what to do and they suggested 1) moving him to the bigger tank 2) feeding peas and 3) epsom salt. I've done all of this (except he won't eat the peas- will try again tomorrow) so I guess it's just a waiting game to see if he gets better.

Sad to say fishie died this evening I have no idea what caused it, but I know I did everything I possibly could to give him a better life and to try and get rid of his illness. I noticed a stringy white poop coming out of him earlier, which suggests an internal infection, but I'm baffled as I kept well on top of checking the water and water changes. Something wasn't meant to be for me

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. Sometimes there's just nothing one can do but I know you did try your best for him.

I'd just like to say thank you to you for all your help and support since I got him, genuinely wouldn't have known what to do without your advice Safe to say I'm not getting any more fish right away after the problems I've had, but as I spent the money on the tank etc I'll keep it for the future as you never know.

EEfan24, I'm very sorry to hear that fishie has gone. I've been following this thread and all your efforts and I'm glad you didn't give up.
See how it goes, you've got a lot of knowledge now and one day you may want to home another finny friend.

Thank you that means a lot Like you say one day maybe. In the meantime I have a brand new tank, ornaments, gravel vac and API master test kit that I've bought! Seems such a shame to waste them but I don't think mentally I'm going to be ready for more fish for quite a while!!

I hope you do get another fish at some point as it would be a pity to not utilise you equipment and what you've learned. Why not continue cycling your new tank and see how you feel once that's completed.

I am about to embark on my 3rd year of university so I feel like all my attention should be on that for now. (Obviously, as we know, when I got the goldfish I was clueless!)

Thats a shame, eefan
I hope you do try again one day - you've learnt a lot and spent out quite a bit so it'd be a shame not to. But I'd advise against getting another goldfish for the tank you have, as I still think its too small for them.
If you add a heater then there'll be plenty of small tropicals that would be perfectly happy in it though.

Sorry to hear your fish died You did all you could, and I am impressed on how much you have learned in such a short time Would be a shame to stop cycling your tank after all that. There are some lovely tropical fish out there.

If you want a fish with personality I can recommend a male betta (siamese fighter), although the tank might look a bit bare! Mine prefers his own company, well apart from the bristlenose plec who stays in his house during the day!

Sorry to hear about your fish EEfan, i've been following this thread but haven't posted as I had no info that could help you.

I have also learnt alot from this thread - I hadn't realised goldfish were so complicated to keep - when I had mine (as a kid) they lived in a goldfish "bowl" and were kept in plain untreated tap water with no water treatments or filters etc - just a single piece of that weed that helps oxygenate the water ! One made it to about 7 years the other 10, although a friend who kept his exactly the same and his fish lived to be 18 or 19.

A lot of people would not give a fish the same care and attention you gave to yours and he probably would have died sooner without your care. Perhaps he had an underlying illness which meant he was always ill. As you have the tank / equipment and now knowledge you'll obviously make a great fish owner . Good luck for next time

I stopped cycling it a while before he died as I was going to move him over with his current filter, so did a 100% water change, but as we were getting new carpet I was delaying it until that's done so he wasn't uprooted again! However I did move him over when he got sick but he died anyway :/ Thanks for the tip, I've heard a lot about bettas so will definitely consider them are they reasonably easy to look after?
