Why do we never have EastEnders episodes set abroad anymore?
I really liked the episodes set abroad especially the episodes set in Spain in 2002 when Peggy went to Frank's fake funeral and Sam's return.
Why don't we have episodes set abroad anymore?

I think there was a deliberate decision by the BBC at the time of the Credit Crunch to cut down on any foreign filming as many people perceived it to be a license fee funded jolly for the cast and crew, often not adding much to the show, For example, the Weymouth episodes were originally meant to take place in Ibiza or Spain I believe but they decided it wouldn't really add anything to the drama. They've drastically cut down on the Holby City foreign jaunts (1 in the last 3 years where they used to be annual) and even the Apprentice has stopped doing them.
The ony time it tends to happen now is for long shoots where it is actually cheaper to go abroad due to cheaper labour and the right kind of architecture - ie historical dramas like Robin Hood, Charles 2 and a couple of Doctor Whos. Personally I liked the first couple in EastEnders (Spain in 94 I think it was with David, Bianca, Ricky, Steve and the Mitchells) was hysterically funny and well written but they got a little tired after a while - Italy and Ireland were both a bit pointless from recollection. |

I thought it would be due to cuts. But I would like them to one episode set abroad somewhere in the future. I doubt they will though

We'll never get to see Ian make a belated return to Ireland following those legendary episodes back in the '90s

I think the general consensus was that viewers want to see the cast at home, most of the jaunts are usually not very well received.

My personal favourite was when Grant, Philth, David Wicks, Bianca and Ricky and co went to Spain on holiday. There was some funny moments in those episodes.
Generally, I like episodes set abroad because sometimes you do need a breather from the misery and same old, same old feeling of the Square. It can be refreshing if done well. |

I recently watched the episodes where Pat, Frank, Kathy, Phil, Sharon and Grant went to Paris in 1993. Amazing episodes, EastEnders at its best.
The trip to France in 2005 with Garry, Minty, Mickey etc... not so good. |

Yep. It aired in 1995. I remember the day I watched it, I didn't go school 'cause I'd injured myself playing football and I laid in bed watching TV all day with so much junk food

because if they are anything like the 'tube' episodes they are a reminder of an over acted 6th form play... tube episodes normally have billy in them who aways acts like a 6th form drama student...
saying that a Ben escaping prison to see Grant in Portugal with the square in toe would be good...they can find a local launderette worker and help her escape her evil twin and and bring back to the square...and maybe they bump into Martin Kemp when there for some more turf war stuff....

Because the BBC preferred to piss a sizeable portion of the budget on the olympics

Unfortunately I think they kept trying to replicate that success with ever diminishing results. The only one I think came close was Peggy, Frank, Pat, Roy, Irene and Terry several years later, partly because it moved several plots along like Irene leaving and Pat and Frank's affair resuming. Plus the frankly incredible mental image conjured by Frank suggesting they try and join the mile high club ![]()

That was the one I was referencing in my initial post. It really was comedy gold - the scenes of Grant and Phil looking for Sam whilst she got talked into bed by David Wicks (her ex husband's new girlfriends dad - but no-one knew at that stage) was pure Whitehall Farce.
