MacBook Connectivity Problems

My MacBook keeps dropping it's connection with the router but according to diagnostics, everything on the laptop is fine, the problem is with the router.

Howver, my iPhone and other laptop has no trouble connecting. Apply want £35+VAT to fix it, ouch! So I am going to try myself

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

It could be wireless interference. You could try changing the wireless channel that your router is using.

Is this something that only started recently? Did you do anything around that time? Updates, new programmes, etc? And it's always worth restarting the router. Some devices are more sensitive to minor problems than others. Try the laptop with other wi-fi network if the problem persists or if it is related only to your router.

I can't remember doing anything recently that would have effected the wifi connectivity. I think I'll take a trip to the local cafe with wifi, see if it works better there. It's definitely not my router, though I initially thought it was, as no other device has a problem connecting

When mine did that I traced it to a faulty Airport card. When it happened again, I traced it to a neighbour's router using the adjacent channel. When it happened again it was a faulty router plug-top power supply. There's a lot of possibilities!

It could be related to the security settings on your router. Some older wifi cards dont handle newer encryption types very well. If its on WPA2 try lowering it to WPA TKIP, at least as a temporary measure.

In my experience the airport cards can be quite problematic - I worked on that one that point blank refused to connect to certain Netgear routers even with all the security off. Apparently it was a common thing and just down to the card not being totally compatible. The one I am using now in my Mini is flakey under Windows (sometimes needs a "repair connection" to get it jump-stated on boot) but ok under Snow Leopard.

It depends what Apple were going to do for the £35+VAT.

If they were just going to fiddle with settings then yes, the OP could probably find a solution online somewhere, but if it was to replace the WiFi card then I doubt she'll find someone on here who will do it at all, never mind for less.

No, but we may come to the conclusion the Mac is faulty.

This sounds more likely to be the standard labour charge for getting someone to take a look at it. The Macbook is going to be well out of warranty now so if the card does need replacing that would need to be factored in as well.

Personally I reckon this is more likely to be down to either a software fault or interference of some kind (although the latter should in theory affect the other devices). OP, If your still getting problems after trying the suggestions on here it would be worth backing up your docs and doing a fresh install of OS X prior to taking it up with Apple. It may sound drastic but its probably one of the first things they will suggest and theres no reason you cant do it yourself.
