Being at Uni I would say BB is the most popular followed by both the iPhone and Android.

You do see loads of iPads though, by far the most popular tablet, ofcoarse that could change with the Nexus 7 Windows RT.

"Cool" changes regularly. IPhone has become too popular and has started to lose it. Same might happen with android but it might be saved by variety in handsets.

Like someone said .... kids don't want the same as their parents whether it is music, movies or tech.

The nexus 7 is currently "cool" but that's a model rather than a company.

Perfect. So you set your budget and compare your requirements against all available tech.

Exactly how it should be.

Just don't narrow your search don't bases on a logo whether its and apple or a droid or Samsung or HTC etc.

Nobody would rush out to buy the latest Samsung fridge ... because its Samsung .... so why would anyone do that with a phone ???

FGS don't get me started on their fridges! (Never buy a Samsung F/fzr btw)... now back to topic :P

That's why I like the Nexus, it does 90% of what I want at a price I'm willing to pay. I bought my wife an ipad, she loves it, I think it's 'ok' at best and not really worth the £400 odd quid I paid for it except to say she's happy, which is the main thing.

It's ashame your kids hate Apple and rebel agains't a mobile phone whilst at UNI. Since being at UNI my daughter has attended a few marches and protests rebelling perhaps for the things she feels strongly about.

But as for Apple/Android I doubt she will ever feel the need to rebel agains't either.

It's embarrasing reading parents on here claiming Android or Apple is cool. According to this site our kids don't want Apple product and think Facebook is uncool.

Someone better tell my daughter as she has just spent 3 months backpacking and took photo's with her iPhone which she then posted on her facebook.

Arts students - iPads
Science students - Android tablets
Engineering students - Raspberry Pi's

OK. so a major corporation that charges high end money for products made in "death trap" sweat-shops ? The richest company in the world that, until recently, was one of the very few companies that didnt 'do' charitable donations. The huge company that used to complain about Microsoft bullying tactics against them is now resorting to bullying tactics to stifle competition ?

Years ago students marched against banks that had a presence in South Africa. Are you now saying its not OK to march against companies with an unusually high death rate in their slum factories ?

Im not saying they are the ONLY company that does this but in their position of wealthiest company in the world they should be leading by example .... they certainly have the spare cash to do this ....

I could go on .....

Are you suggesting that students shouldnt feel strongly about these things and should only agree with what your daughter thinks ?

why ? I run a junior football squad and know what phones the lads have and what they consider cool or uncool. Facebook usage is also falling. I also have two kids. Are you suggesting that I dont know what they think is cool and what they dont ?

Who said anywhere that nobody had iPhones or used Facebook ? Plenty of people still buy tank-tops ... doesnt make them cool .....

If your daughter is so passionate about 'rights' and marching then perhaps suggest some light reading about Apple and see if she still loves her iPhone

i really really try not to get involved in this kind of thing. but the hypocrisy is so glaringly obvious and i don't think you should be insulting other people's kids. or misrepresenting your own.

OK so i take from this that your daughter is really in to big issues and has no time for the superficial. ok.

and parents shouldn't offer insight into what their kids find cool or otherwise as that is embarrassing. all very reasonable.

you are the same person that wrote this though?

Most kids in UNI or school have no idea what Android is, its either iPhone or Blackberry,”

No "hypocrisy" I genuinely believe my daughter is attached to her iPhone sometimes. But it could be replaced with "Phone".

Both Android and iPhone are great, unfortunately neither are seen as cool accept perhaps within council estates and homes where the TV is larger than the bookcase.

The much younger 11-17 year olds do think Blackberry is cool because they MUST have BBM. My partner (a teacher)informs me of this lol

Kids now see iPad, iPhone, BLackberry etc as something you just have. They are digital natives, as opposed to us old folk who are digital migrants and believe there ay or may not be kudos attached to certain devices.

My God, you really are digging yourself in deeper now !!

So Android and Apple are only cool on Council estates and only Council estates have large TVs ??? What century are you from ???

My kids attend a private school as do half of my football squad. My kids both have android phones and want android tablets for christmas (my wife wants an iPad but she aint getting one ). We have a big TV and we dont live on a 'council estate'. Im 41 and like gadgets and have pretty much purchased all the ones I have wanted through the decades.

I dont think my family fit into your Victorian image of little England

Oh ... and "accept perhaps within council estates" should be "except perhaps within council estates". I learnt that without a large bookshelf

Oh dear, council estates? Really? Is that the best you could do? If you're going to resort to insulting people who disagree with you and pull you up on your hypocrisy, then please try harder.
Talking of teachers, I hope your husband doesn't teach English, he'd be mortified at your posts.

As for the rest of your diatribe... well it's pretty pathetic really.

I don't think there is much disagreement here, I its just IMO to think a piece of technology is "cool" is an out dated idea.

Years ago perhaps, when having a colour screen on your handset or a camera maybe there was something to consider "cool" but not anymore.

Now days all kids have a phone they aren't impressed really. The younger ones wouldn't swap their Blackberry's for fear of missing out on a BBM broadcast.

The older ones would perhaps prefer a top of the line phone EG- S3 or iPhone4s. But I doubt any care about the OS.

I mean a HTC Wildfire S runs Android but its a god awful phone. If anything they will want to top of the range phone which iPhone is also a Samsung S3. The only phone picked specifically for its OS is Blackberry.

Actually you're quite right..

I'm getting a Windows 8 phone, A microsoft surface, and updating to Windows 8.

Purely because of the OS lol, never mind.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know how much Google Play charge for shipping the Nexus 7 to a UK address ? £159 for an 8gb does sound ilke a great price but not if they are loading on another £15 for shipping. Thanks in advance

It is £10 if I remember correctly.

On the other hand, there can be benefits to having a similar phone to what your friends have. That was especially true with Blackberry because of BBM, but also applies with other systems. If your friends are playing some great new app and it won't run on your phone, you'll feel left out whatever kind of phone it is.

yup. It ended up being a total cost of £169 for the 8gb from Play Store, or £189 (free delivery, plus a voucher code giving a tenner off) from Tesco Direct for the 16gb.

£40 difference was enough to make me consider the 8gb version, £20 difference? Guess which I picked

It works that way with rubbish too. At least that's how I recall it when I was young.

True, but......

If you don't buy that "great new app" everyone will be finished with it within 3 days. The Apps you need and use daily tend to be productive apps.

So it doesn't really matter if your friends have them. BBM is important though to younger Blackberry user's as it's important to send someone a message telling them they need to send it to 15 more people or else.....

That's not true, people play games like draw something and words with friends for months and still do with it not being available on platforms like Windows Phone 7

That's amazing information and Draw something or Words with friends should 100% be the reason people choose which phone they should have.

For me though there are much more important things I need to consider. Good damn I'm so unfashionable, I dream of a day I can be cool. Maybe if I buy a Windows-8 phone I will be cool................

One simple reason - Blackberry has a special tariff for worldwide use. I travel to New Zealand for long periods of time and they have a tariff which I pay £15 a month and have unlimited data usage.

As you can get all the google apps working on blackberry then everything is seamless and affordable.

I haven't found another phone/carrier combo which comes close to this!
