EE - Ben/Ronnie (tragic arc similarities)
New viewers will think Ben is an evil little swine, but if you look back at the amount of suffering and pain he's been through his entire life, it makes it quite hard to not feel sympathy of him.
In some ways, he can be compared to Ronnie - both were forced to endure misery after misery for years and years and in the end they both snapped in a moment of madness and made a terrible mistake (i.e Ronnie stealing Tommy, Ben killing Heather), however they both in the end realised the error in their ways and payed the price for their actions |

You are right in pointing out that Ronnie and Ben share a similar dramatic function, that is exposing paternal violence and abuse within the family.
Since soaps are conservative at heart, these transgressive characters have to be villified and ultimately expelled from the community (to restore belief in family values) which gives them a tragic quality, poignantly conveyed in their isolation/imprisonment that sets them free. |
