Anybody from Bristol (or who knows the city)?

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the area around St Nicholas Road is like?

Thanks!

Can you give me the beginning of the postcode and I will look and then tell you what the area is like. Its quite a big city and there is more than one road with that name.

It's B59.
I tried looking it up on Google but didn't get much that was of any use...

Sorry yes it's BS9...damn my handwriting! It's definitely Road, not Street.

Ah ok, i've found it, but its BS2 definitely not BS9. There is no road by that name in BS9, but there is in BS2.

BS2 is St Pauls, it depends what you're looking for but I wouldn't call it a "nice" area to live. Its cheap for a reason, mainly due to the high crime rates and other unsavoury things.

Fine to visit, but if you had a family or were a woman on your own, I wouldn't want to live there.

Can I ask what your plans are etc?

Ah right...unfortunately I'm a woman on my own, but I would be house sharing. It's only for a couple of months. As I'm on a placement, I can't really afford to live in a nice area...would you say it's OK in daytime, or it rough all the time? I probably wouldn't be walking in the dark by myself anyway, wherever I live.

You'd be ok in the daytime, as long as you weren't the type wandering about flashing your phone/ipod etc. I work just the other side of the motorway but support a few families in BS2. I'm only ever there during the day.

If its for a couple of months then you'll be ok, where are you travelling to for your placement?

Haha yeah I'm fairly streetwise, I lived in a few dodgy areas as a student and I was fine...I don't mind roughing it for a bit, as long as it's not sink estate, gang territory type of dodgy...but I don't think there's much of that in Bristol?

My placement isn't too far, it's in the Clifton area, Google maps informed me it's about 30 mins walk, which is fine.

Its rough, but i'd be warning you off Stapleton Road (where I work ) a lot sooner. Easton is now worse (the motorway separates the two places)

Just don't go out at night, the St Pauls gang and the Somalis of Easton aren't always the best of friends. (I mean that seriously)

The walk to Clifton is all uphill on the way there just to warn you, if you can get to a number 8 or 9 bus route, that takes you up to Clifton, or a 54 bus.

Clifton is lovely, I lived there for 5 years, beautiful but way too bloody expensive.

Shout if you want to know anything else, oh stay away from City Road (its where the ladies of the night are, and would probably be on your route) you're not far from Cabot's circus the huge big, fairly new shopping centre.

It's always worth doing a Google Street View of the place. This one might give you an idea of the character of the street:

What's the St Paul's gang?

I spoke to the landlord and he said he's been living in the area with his family for years and has never had any trouble...but he would say that!

Yeah I loved Clifton when I went to see the city, but there's now way I can afford to live there. I'd rather pay less for a crappy place and have a bit more left over for socialising etc. But at the same time I don't want to be living somewhere where I'd be putting myself in danger.

Thanks for all the info though!

A gang, as in a gang who generally cause trouble. They don't pick on the average person, like I said their main issue is with the Somali lot who have appeared in Easton and started undercutting the drug prices.

I'm not joking, like I said though, they won't go starting on the average person. Just worth bearing in mind.

There are other areas if you look about, i'd be happy to recommend a few, but if its just for a couple of months it'll be fine.

Yeah I read about the whole drugs thing...I think I'll be OK for 2 months, as you say. At the end of the day, if you're not careful any area can be dangerous. i think I'll steer clear of Easton though, I've heard too many bad things about it!
Thanks again, all the info has been helpful

I used to live in St Nicholas Road. I left in 2010 after over 2 years of living there. I lived alone in a ground floor flat. Oh, and I'm female. I never once had any trouble there. I used to walk to work at 7am and I felt quite safe. Any trouble there is gang related but this can happen anywhere. The only real nusiance to me was reggae music playing at all hours during the summer but then I hate reggae.
Really bugs me when people say to avoid St Pauls like the plague. The people who have such an attitude have never lived there.

I llive up the road from St Pauls - walk through alone it all the time (single small female), dark light - not bothered.

Yes it's true there is tension between the Afro-Carribs and the Somali' youths - but I've never noticed it to be honest.

I've never had any problems - and neither have any of my friends.

I really don't mean this in a patronising way, but it's probably going to sound like it - honest I don't

Maybe I'm slightly one sided as I work in the area and often have to deal with the fall out from what goes on between the gangs etc, as part of my job.
