Is it possible to go from Contract to Sim Only whilst halfway through a contract?

I'm now in the 13th month of a 24 month contract with Orange. I have finally found a suitable phone which is a second hand/never used Orange Barcelona Android phone and am now happy with this.

I do not want to upgrade, and feel I'm paying too much for my contract when the Sim Only deals are better value for what it's worth.

Can I change halfway through?

Doubt it, not unless you pay orange the difference in price. You signed a 24 month contract at £xx a month, that is what you have to pay.

Better to just see out the contract then change.

What's usually the difference you have to pay with 10/11 months to spare?

Thank you anyway for your advice

You are still liable for the full remainder of contract, so 10 months left at say £30 a month would be £300 you would have to pay to get out of your existing contract....no point really may as well see it out.

Of course not - that's why it's a contract!

BTW what happened to your original phone?

When you get a contract phone you are basically paying for the phone on HP along with a bit for the minutes/texts etc, that's why they don't seem as good value as sim only.

i don't think that would happen.
Like with me, my original contract phone died and i still got six months at least to run on my contract, but I don't think Vodafone is going to say since I had to buy a new phone they will stick me on a sim only contract. It don't happen.

i doubt i will go for a contract phone again, go to a sim only at the end of the contract

Contract is the important word, you have signed to a 24 month legal and binding contract so I doubt very very much if they will let you walk without you paying a fee.

I'm not sure everyone quite realises that when you go for a contract phone you are basically getting that "free" phone they hand you on HP for the next 12/24 months along with paying towards the call package etc.

Compared to the sim only deals they can look poor value but you have to factor in what it would cost you to buy the phone initially which these days can easily be £300 - £400+

With cashback deals though and if you want/need a new phone you can get very good value on contract phones if you shop around and work it out. For example my 24month contract will have cost me around £650 minus £180 I was able to claim in cashback (by redemption after 6/9/12/15/18 months so had to be pretty good at getting the claims in which I did an got all my cashback) making my total outlay £470....at the time the phone I got would have cost I think over £400 to buy (original Galaxy S) which really means I paid under £70 for 24 months service, much cheaper than any sim only deal out there?!

So they're good if you want the latest new phone and shop around. Personally I'm going to go to either sim only or payg when my contract expires soon as it will save me a fair chunk of money each month (also my contract wont be such good value now the cashback is over) and am happy with my current phone for another couple of years at least actually until it breaks I think, not sure I would get a contact phone again but just buy one of these under £100 androids and stick on sim only/payg.

I agree with jimmy7bellies, the only reason I went for a contract was because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about these smart phones. A contract was the best way to get one at the time. Sadly my phone died and I still got six more months to pay for the thing.

I was considering going to a sim only contract anyway after, smart phones now have come down in price, when I got my HTC wildfire, it would have cost me nearly £250 and that was a budget phone, I now got a phone with more power and a better screen for £100. so once my contract end I may as well keep this phone and go sim only,

As for trying out a smart phone I am glad I did, i am not one of these people that will use every feature, but being able to get emails and peak on facebook is nice.

I was the same, never been one before to have the "best"/latest handsets but just for once I fancied something cutting edge...and least for a few months anyway it was, everyone wanted fondle and play with it even iphone owners lol. Wasn't long before the S2 and now S3 came out. It is still a bit OTT for my needs, I will be happy to stick with it for years if it lasts that long,,,if not a cheaper android phone will do me. Just be glad to knock 15/20 a month off my bill soon.
