Ella Ella Ella!
She may not have won The X Factor back in 2012 – but Ella Henderson is gearing up for the big time.
“When the X Factor bubble bursts, it’s a comedown,” admits 17-year-old Ella Henderson. Despite being favourite to win the 2012 show – and even getting Adele’s vote (“My jaw was on the floor when she Tweeted me”), she was knocked out before the quarter-finals. James Arthur went to win, but it wasn’t the end of the story for Ella. “Two days after I left, I had four record labels pitching for me,” she says, matter of factly.
She chose Syco, Simon Cowell’s label, and promptly left her home town of Tetley in Lincolnshire and jetted to LA to work with Grammy-winning legends Diane Warren and Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds.
“He’s written with Whitney and Mariah, so I was in the recording booth thinking, ‘Has Mariah touched these headphones? Has she breathed on this mic?’”.
With record due out in March, it’s been cooking longer than most post-X Factor debuts.
“I needed the time to write, to experience things.” So what can we expect? “It’s raw, soulful and honest – there are tracks where I’d kill to put the guy’s name in it,” she laughs. “I think people will be surprised, they’ve only really heard me sing ballads, but it was fun finding an up-tempo sound that worked. We played around with a lot of beats.”
Her influences range from Lorde, London Grammer and Swedish duo Fame, to Sinatra, Motown and reggae. Don’t expect a ‘retro’ vibe though: “That’s the one thing I didn’t want to do. There’s been a lot of people putting spin on Motown – I wanted to do something soulful, but in a way you’ve never heard before.”
Does she feel she has to shake off the X Factor label to be taken seriously? “I hate the phrase ‘serious artist’, it’s so pretentious – but yes, I never thought I’d go down the TV talent show route. However, the year I went on the show, you could perform your own songs. The fact is, X Factor is an incredible platform and without that show I wouldn’t be sitting here today.”
For now, Ella’s not too worried about the reaction to her material: “Every single song, every visual, every video is how I envisioned it: I couldn’t have done any more. I’ve given it my everything – and I’m proud.”
Ella’s album is out in March.

Me too.

She has worked with some really great names on this album. i just hope that the label & her A & R team have chosen the album tracks wisely... She has been out of the spotlight for a long LONG time & alot of people have forgotten about her, she really needs to come out with a good 1st single otherwise it will be an ulmightly uphill battle!!
