Hey well I'm new to all this!

Firstly, I'd just like to say that despite the title of this thread I'm not against everything that isn't US. I've watched Corrie since the day I was born more or less (last week's episodes were brilliant) and I'm watching Sons & Daughters for the 3rd time around so I cover all soap bases but in my opinion US soaps are the best! As has been said time and time again I'm sure, US soaps and UK/Aussie soaps are thousands of miles apart in more ways than one. US soaps are escapist, outrageous, camp and over the top which is why 99.9% of UK viewers will never be able to catch on to them.

Trying to follow a US soap in the UK is a nightmare as you can never fully enjoy it for the simple fact that you never know when the plug can be pulled at any moment by some ratings hungry TV executive.

Luckily at the moment my first couple of hours home from work are perfectly filled by Sunset Beach, General Hopsital and The Bold & The Beautiful (sent from Australia) but how long can it last???

I was in America on holiday a couple of weeks ago and thought 'If I lived here with 9 daytime soaps plus trashy gameshows like The Price Is Right & Wheel Of Fortune to follow when would I ever go out?'

So that's me! I would love to speak to other like minded people!

I love the US Soaps. When I lived in Canada 14 years ago, my fave soap was The Young and the Restless!! I also liked Guiding Light, As the World Turns and The Bold and the Beautiful. I really miss watching them. At the minute, I am watching GH on ABC1 and Melrose Place on Channel 5. I also like American Programmes like Dawson's Creek, The O.C. and One Tree Hill.

Well thanks for the welcome....I never watched Sunset Beach first time round, got hooked when ITV2 started the repeats which of course were dropped but have never seen the episodes when the series really got started with evil twins, tidal waves, turkey basters and all that (wonderful) nonsense. I had Freeview installed especially to watch General Hospital so they better not axe it! And I am almost exactly 12 months behind with The Bold & The Beautiful...

All time soap baddie is defo Sheila Carter on B&B (especially when she came back and shot Taylor) and I LOVE Tracey on General Hospital, what a cow!

Corrie Tracy is indeed also a monster bitch! Wy on earth do Ken & Dreary keep forgiving her? Still I would love to live in the same house as Blanche, the most acid tongued woman in UK soaps surely!

Your POINT?!

pffff, stop causing trouble, just don't read the damn thread if you know itll be about US soaps.

Jay read up the thread. Somebody mentioned Tracy Quartermaine, somebody said "I'm sure Tracy Barlow is better" and I merely posted my amusement at this, stating i think Tracy Q is a much better and more experienced bitch!! Anyway, read the title of this particular thread

Hi, US soaps are indeed the best, its very sad we dont get most of them in the uk

My first US soap i saw was Santa Barbara on itv in the late 80s. It was unlike anything we were used to here, camp and OTT it was and such a fresh change from the misserey of brit-soaps[YAWN].

Of cource it was axed by itv who dont like OTT soaps.

Ok I'm not here to get involved in the argument, just want to welcome david72. I'm a HUGE US soap fan! Bascially the same as Safra, I descovered Sunset Beach halfway through it's run on FIVE and watched every episode from then. After it was cancelled converted to watched The Bold and the Beautiful and Days of Our Lives on FIVE, until they got cancelled. I followed B&B onto LivingTV, until they too cancelled it. Now I'm working on ways to try and get the show brought back to the UK. I have watched every episode of Melrose Place that Ftn have aired so far, all Seasons One, Two and Three, hoping and waiting for the premier of Season Four. I'm currently watching the SB reruns on FIVE, seeing these episodes that I have never watched before is great!

I loved Y&R when i saw it, it is such a classy soap!

Days of our Lives was great and i really loved the flight of terror to Paris with princess Gina's body being flown to her chateux!

I tried watching Melrose Place on ftn a while back but i couldn't really get into it. I didn't give it much of a chance though so i may have to give it ago. Is it still on FTN anytime?
I know it is shown on five on Saturday morning but i tape Sons and Daughters then and have to space to tape MP as well.

Safra, did you watch Melrose from episode one? Because if you did and didn't give it a chance then I'm not surprised it didn't interest you. Season One is awful, up until around episode 27 then the show kicks in, a little after Heather Locklear joins the cast and it is GREAT. I have to say that my favourites are:

1: Melrose Place
2: Sunset Beach
3 The Bold and the Beautiful
4: Days of Our Lives

I haven't seen any others.

i love them all!!!!

i love The Young and the Restless & The Bold and the Beautiful for their classiness and sophistication, as well as their huge emphasis on character driven drama. Bill Bell who created both is a genius storyteller.
Some of my favorite plots:
Tycoon Victor Newman 'rescues' and falls in love with working class stripper Nikki Reed and saves her from her life. Then the subsequent Nikki/Victor/Ashley triangle.
The Sheila/Lauren babyswitch story that spanned both Y&R and B&B.
David Kimball marrying Nina for her money and then terrorising her and her family.
Phyllis' schemes to get what she wants, played to perfection by two time Emmy winner Michelle Stafford.
The Katherine and Jill rivalry which stretches right back to the 1970s.

I love As the World Turns and Guiding Light for their epic histories and colourful characters. I love the fact Hogan Sheffer and David Kriezeman have revived both shows, that were considered ones your grandparents watched, and made them viable for the 21st century, bringing them younger fanbases.

And the NBC campy soaps. These are perhaps the most famous, they are so bad they are good!!! I love the OTT acting, its pure escapism. Pure unadulterated trashy escape!!! I just curse Channel 5 for taking Days off air before the Salem Stalker story kicked off. I swear that would have brought in the ratings. Beloved characters were killed gruesomely left right and centre.
Especially when beloved vetern and Days staple Marlena was revealed to be the Killer!!! This was the moment:

TONY: I knew it was you!
MARLENA (holding syringe): You're just too smart for your own good, Tony!!!
http://www.dayscentral.com/media/vid...1-29-reveal.rm

And finally, the ABC soaps!!! A mixture of traditional soaps, and high drama, just everything! Fast paced, exciting, the works, characters you can really get into!!!
Erica Kane, Pine Valley's number 1 diva on AMC, with her bastard daugther Kendall making her life hell!!
The babyswapping story that spans both All My Children and One Life to Live, addictive!!!
The Viki/Dorian rivalry on One Life to Live!
Skye and Luke's romance on GH!!
I just love it!!!
OK calmed down now.
