It also gives us a chance to judge the contestants on their voice without the comparison to the original version of the song they cover.

I sort of like it, but I doubt the judges would criticize the act in general that much if they wrote their own song and performed it well, even if it wasn't a well-written song.

Ive Allways Felt there should a a song writing week or atleast the winners single should be written by that finalist so IMO its good for the show.

I agree to a point. Ella for instance gave a very good audition with a nice song. I noticed she doesn't have a whole lot of power or range in her voice, but when singing her own style of music it sounded well. So I wouldn't go as far to say that she has amazing singing ability, but what she can do with her own material and songs in her own style will be very good. I'm not sure if I explained myself well here.

I think it's great if people want to sing their own songs on the X factor. Ella did very well last night.
However, I don't think being a good song-writer should be a necessity in this show. Some people act like you must be a good song-writer to be a credible artist, but quite a few popular acts in the charts are not song-writers. |

The home written song that was performed last night was quite bad, repetitive lyric - ever verse seemed to end with "And goodbye".
When Tulisa went back stage to ask about what it was about - expecting an Adele type "boyfriend left me boo hoo" no doubt - the girl said it was about her granddad. I don't think Tulisa would have bothered if she's known that. |

I think it's good to encourage auditionees to showcase their songs if they have written any. Ven if their singing wasn't the best they may be discovered as a songwriter. It can sometimes be a disadvantage though because the audience might not relate to the song in the same way or get into the performance as much.

Any song that'll help spread thin the usual live show song choice suspects is welcome. I'd take any new material (regardless of quality) over the likes of 'With Or Without You' and 'Purple Rain'- I don't think it's possible to give a highlight performance of such songs anymore!
So long as the songs are indeed impressive I won't mind so-so singers being granted automatic 'authentication'- hey, it's a gauge of potential post-show success just like any other. However, I wouldn't wanna see 'only 16' year olds etc. receiving an overdose of praise for iffy efforts purely because they tried to write. |

I really like it personally. I can see why some people would say that it gives this illusion of authenticity to hide the fact if they had to sing covers they might not be able to impress as much, but imo that point works both ways. I think Rebecca Ferguson's actually a good example. When she was actually on the show, she was decent, but since she came off an started singing her own material, I think she's seriously proved how talented she is. Some singers are best able to show what they can do singing their own material.
