Radio 2, nedes to build on His Buskers Voice

ok I know this is a radio thread, but that forum is just for radio nerds, and former local jocks slagging off Heart, but His Buskers Voice, could be moved to TV.

So 6 Music DJ Jon Holmes is sitting in for Graham Norton on Radio 2 at present, and whilst his Radio 2 show is simply not as good as his 6 Music show, one feature is just utterly brilliant, and is really something BBC Radio 2 needs to do more of.

The feature being "His Buskers Voice" where Jon gives Buskers the chance to be heard on Radio 2, they play two songs, a cover and one of there own writing.

So far they have all been excellent, and hearing the songs they themselves have written is a massive breath of fresh air, from the "new music" that is simply the latest new group to be launched from a record label, which is a trap Radio 2 can fall in to from time to time.

Never mind Radio 2, I think this could also have a BBC 2 show in it, air it after Jools Holland.

For now, the producers are choosing great buskers, who have written good songs, Radio 2 needs more of it, even if its limited to Radio 2.

Also on another subject, Jon is still trying to flog tickets to his Edinburgh show, someone should tell him, that the trains to Edinburgh are rubbish, the first train of the day gets in at about 11am, missing the start of the show. That said his Radio 2 show a pale imitation of his 6 Music show, im not sure I would want to see it live.

Erm, this is the broadcasting thread.

Big fan of 6 music here though (closely followed by R2)

Radio is broadcasting, but the post is also about the wider BBC, and how this is a rare example of genuine new talent, that the BBC as a whole should be supporting and embracing.

My apologies, I read the bit above and completely misunderstood it.

I will look up the broadcast you mentioned on the iPlayer. I tend to think that if something or someone is really popular, they will be moved - BBC Radio are really good in that sense.

His Buskers Voice is at 2:36:00 (well some Def Leppard first, but around that time)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...on_18_08_2012/

However to be completely honest I would not recommend the whole show, its dreadful compared to his 6 Music show, and the absence of David is leaving a much bigger hole than I thought it would, the bland sitcom legend co-presenters are not a good fit for the show. (It may work for Graham Norton)

Meanwhile whilst some of the music is fine, there are a few tracks which would never have been on 6 Music, really let it down.

Brilliant! Thank you for this. I can certainly put up with some Def Lep first. I'll let you know what I think

I have just listened. I too think it would be a great addition on R2. The fact that these buskers are heard first and recommended presumably by BBC R2/6 Music stafff means there is a certain quality level.

Aside from the busker having a great voice, there is a tendency, at least in London, to assume that buskers are for want of a better word bums. She came across as likeable and intelligent. I never realised that there was a busking community and I thought they did it all on their own.

As for R2, I would consider having it as a segment on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show every morning - he is good at interviewing and has the most listeners, plus if you consider that the majority of buskers are in London or near railway stations (I believe), perhaps there is more chance of listeners taking notice.

I am not sure if it could make it to TV though as I am not sure of it would work as a show.

you are right about Chris, however I feel it should be a Simon May Drivetime thing, or at the very least a feature Jon can keep in his pocket to use whenever he covers for someone on Radio 2.

As for how they get the buskers, I dont know, im sure its easy enough to find a busker in London, with a decent voice, finding one with an original song is another matter.

All 3 of the buskers so far have spoken very well, about the busker job, and themselves. It should make people view them in a new light.

As for TV, it would need to find its audience, which is why I suggest putting it after something like Jools Holland.

loved "I write songs for boybands" in this weeks show, god I hope this feature can continue on 6 Music next week, and something can do done with the great original music we have seen in the past few weeks. It seems such a waste to let this feature die now.
