Lets firstly say: Like that Afraid song!
Now, back to business. m06een00, I'm Afraid (geddit) if we were fighter planes in a dog fight, I have utterly shot you to pieces and its just getting embarrassing now. Believe me, I am a gentleman, I take no pleasure from this, I am saying for your own good please press the ejector seat button now because your increasingly puerile arguments just come across as if you are a person that doesn't like to admit they might have got a few things wrong than someone who has a valid point.
What makes everything you say so mind numbingly stupid is your total lack of knowledge about Del Rey's back catalogue and what she does. If I was you, I might go away and do some research before talking anymore B.S. But no, here we are again.
I also think you totally misunderstand the word "influence." Maybe its years of bad Indie bands copying their dad's record collections that have turned that term into more would be more accurately "ripped off." Lana does it the way it should be done. She's absorbed what others have done, but then like all the great artists SHE'S TURNED IT INTO HER OWN. i.e. put her own spin on it, created her own vibe out of it, made her own style. And put new things in there to boot.
Just for the sake of it. If you actually listened to what I said, her MAY JAILER record, had the Joni Mitchell, Drake, and Country-and lets stress that COUNTRY vibe too going on, that's a big factor too. Do you think maybe there's a little clue in the title "A Star for Nick" of one of her songs? Oh you wouldn't know that cause you've clearly never heard of it because you don't even know the name May Jailer in the 1st place.
I would say listen to the record but you'll only come back with a load of trite nonsense about how crap it is and how its nothing like person X. I can see you saying "she's nothing like as good as Nick Drake on guitar" (few are, he was a wizard, but she has a better sense of pop) and you hated it.
No, what its really like is what she was feeling at that moment in time. I mentioned a dead junkie boyfriend and this is his 1st mention on this record. We don't know if its 100% true or a metaphor for something else. But whoever this guy is he seems to have made a great impression on her and she still writes about him now. Songs from the current album Born to Die, Dark Paradise, Summertime Sadness and possibly Blue Jeans and new song Body Electric +others seem to be about him. Now that's an influence. You mock her depressed style, ever consider she might have some very real reasons for feeling that way?
She's not like Nancy? Christ loads of people spot that one influence is there if nothing else. Again, its not pure Nancy its other things too, mostly herself, but a whole range of things, I'll give you that. She doesn’t do the cheesy side of Nancy that’s for sure. But I can see something of Nancy in tracks like jazz lounge Yayo (from Lizzy Grant Album, song title means slang term for cocaine), ranging through to unreleased demo and fan fave wonderfully bonkers Kinda Outta Luck (the intro mainly, it becomes MANIC surf guitar pure fun after that) through to Million Dollar Man (very James Bond song as well I think) and even her greatest hit Video Games itself.
You may disagree with me. That's you opinion. This is mine. We could argue all day about who she sounds a bit like really couldn't we? But I think its pretty dumb not to acknowledge that there’s an ickle bit of Nancy there. You don’t notice how she likes her guitars soaked it sh*t loads of wobbly tremolo effect aka Nancy version of Bang Bang (not cher version). Or the deep husky voice-though Lana goes deeper and higher too boot. I think Lana’s way technically better vocally-no disrespect Nancy.
I believes she’s also into Daddy Sinatra too. They’re both in there. She likes that type of music. And a load of other things too. Stress electro music and hip hop.
If you really want to take her to pieces some people also say she's got Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks going on in there too. Think she is just a very intelligent woman who’s absorbed the best music out there and come up with her own style out of that. And Amen to that.
As for album no.2 (well its actually 4, if we include May and Lizzy Albums+B2D or 5 if we include B2D paradise edition) I honestly think Lana could do anything. She could end up suddenly doing a Dubstep/Jazz album on the spot. Or something a bit pop. Or a rock album, or hop hop urban, or more of the beautiful same, or unreleased songs finally released, or something nobody has heard before. Or all of that lot together. Literally anything can happen with her.
Plus: She’s recorded 3 songs for a film soundtrack. Did hope it might be Bond (she should do a Bond song, its written in the stars, she’s a perfect fit), but its gotta be something else-more arty. Can’t wait to hear them!
