Deputy Executive Producer...SIMON ASHDOWN

An alternate take on the BBC One soap, Eastenders, picking up from where former Executive Producer, Bryan Kirkwood left off. This is a work of fiction and no copyright infringement is intended. The BBC and the actors displayed or written about in this blog have no connection to this work and their name and image is used fairly.

BBC APPOINTS NEW EXEC. PRODUCER
The BBC has announced today that twenty year old, Dan Taylor, has been appointed as the new executive producer of long running soap opera, Eastenders. After the sudden departure of Bryan Kirkwood, the Controller of BBC Drama Production, John Yorke scoured the country for the new face of the channels much loved soap. Virtual unknown Taylor was a surprise appointment but Yorke seems happy with his new man.

“Dan is brilliant young writer and he’s exactly the type of person that can bring the show into a new era!” Yorke said, “He’s incredibly good at what he does and I know he’ll be able to merge the old with the new and bring the programme back to life.”

When questioned about Taylor’s age, Yorke simply said: “I have no qualms about his age, that wasn’t even an issue for me. He can do the job and that’s the most important thing.”

Interviewed outside Elstree studios this morning Taylor said he’s delighted to have secured the job and promises to bring about a groundbreaking renaissance for the show.

“I want to take the show back to its roots while still taking it in a new and fresh direction.” Taylor announced, “It’s all about the characters! That’s my focus.” He continued.

When asked about his predecessor, Bryan Kirkwood, Taylor told us: “Bryan [Kirkwood] did a fantastic job but unfortunately the show isn’t in a good place right now, it hasn’t been for a while. I don’t think he’s responsible for that, I just think the show has forgotten what it’s all about!”

Taylor’s reign starts officially in September, with his first major storyline taking place at Christmas. But he’ll oversee production between now and then with acting EP, Lorraine Newman, who Taylor has already asked to continue as Series Producer. It’s also believed the new executive has asked former consultant and screenwriter, Simon Ashdown to be his number two, and has approached Controller, John Yorke about returning to the show as a consultant.

“John [Yorke]’s a very busy man but he’s still very passionate about this show and I believe we could all benefit from his wealth of experience.” Taylor told us.

It is also rumoured that as many as ten characters could leave the show between now and the end of the year, on top of the already departing Nicola Stapleton.

Some great storylines coming up in August and September as newcomers and returnees such as Suzanne Fletcher (Shelley Conn), Rainie Cross (Tanya Franks) and Felicity Barnes (Anna Friel) continue to cause a stir while the returns of long running characters Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) are already pencilled in while the explosive exits of Ben Mitchell (Joshua Pascoe) and Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline) are also on the cards in the near future.

Make sure you make your voices on this thread and over on the website, comments on individual episodes would be appreciated and I want to know what you like, what you don't like and what you'd like to see.

Don't forget to explore the site, there is a lot more in store than just what you see in the opening post of this thread. We have so far aired 59 episodes dating back to April 2012 and were not slowing down anytime soon.

Make your voices heard over on the blog itself and in the comments section of this thread.

Yes, it's the same one but rewritten slightly in places and obviously, a lot more has been added since last time, expanding and/or changing certain storylines etc...for example, I changed my mind about Mandy staying on a while so made it so she left in the same episode as Ian, like the real show just...differently. :P

Do you write one too?

The only story still on course is the Heather murder storyline really and even that is different. Otherwise, it's very much my spin on things.

But I'm glad you like Jacques, he's a really interesting character cause he's a bit of bad boy but with a good heart. At the moment though, Rainie is my favourite character to create storylines for and actually, I'm enjoying exploring Anthony and Lucy alot more than I expected - they kind of accidently fell together in my verison with no Joey or Alice, they ended up an item but it's actually kind of fun. Almost a role reversal for the pair as Lucy is very much playing the role Anthony is in the show while Anthony is taking on Alice's role with bits of Lucy's.

I've always liked Rainie and I see what you mean with Anthony and Lucy- are you getting rid of Anthony in yours? In my version (post BK)MI have Fatboy and Lucy together

Will do!

Episodes from this week are up to read when you're ready. I'm excited to think that I am almost all caught up. I fell behind massively in May/June but I've almost done three months worth of episodes in about two weeks which I'm super proud. But the great thing about the blog is I can make it appear as though it was always there, posted on the date the episodes would of aired, dead on 7:30/8!

Liked Ben's suicide attempt doof doof, really dramatic and unexpected!

I really like as well how Jane is becoming re-involved with ian, Tanya, Lucy etc. There's a character who never should have left, she would have been great as a friend for Ian.

So, were not quite all caught up yet but were slowly but surely getting there. Lots has happened over the Summer and so far into our September but there is lots more to come. And this interview should give you a hint while we fill the gaps.

I wanted to compare notes with Newman so my interview takes place at exactly the same place time so this will give you a clue as to what is coming up for the rest of September and October.

The Interview. And to compare, Newman's real interview.

‘EASTENDERS’ EXEC DAN TAYLOR ON FUTURE PLANS FOR THE SOAP – INTERVIEW
Source – Digital Spy

It’s been all change at the top on EastEnders this year as Dan Taylor has taken over the position of executive producer, having realived Lorraine Newman of her duties after she took the role in a acting capacity after the departure of Bryan Kirkwood in March. John Yorke also returned to the soap in a consulting role, while Simon Ashdown was promoted to Deputy Executive Producer. Lorriane Newman also returned to her role as Series Producer after stepping aside after Taylor’s appointment.
Here, in his second in-depth interview since taking the helm of the BBC’s flagship soap, Dan chats exclusively to Digital Spy about his vision for EastEnders and what’s to come.

How are you finding the new job so far?
“It’s been an absolute blast if I’m honest. I’ve really enjoyed worked alongside such a creative team that John [Yorke], Simon [Ashdown] and I have put together over the last six months and having been a fan of the show for many years, it almost feels like a dream come true for me. I believe I have a brilliant understanding of the show and I think my vision for the soap is something fans really want to see!”

What can you tell us about your overall vision for EastEnders? Are there any particular changes or differences that you’d like the viewers to notice as your episodes continue coming through?
“When I came in earlier this year I knew changes needed to be made! Things weren’t right and even with some really strong writing from the likes of Simon Ashdown, Rob Gittins and John Greening, some fantastic acting and lots of promising storylines, things haven’t gone quite to plan. I immediately did away with the block storytelling as much as I possibly could and I put a stop to some storylines I knew wouldn’t go down well with the fans. For example I did away with an infidelity storyline for Kat but unfortunatly because of Jessie Wallace’s departure later this year, I couldn’t scrap those plans completely and to simply ammend them.”
“I also wanted to inject that sense of community back into the Square which I think we’ve lost in the last couple of years, so hopefully that will already have become more noticable.”

What do you feel is the current public perception of EastEnders, and is there anything about that perception that you’d like to change during your time as executive producer?
“I’d like to think it’s improved some what in the last couple of months but I’d like to stress to fans not to give up on us, this a learning curve for me and the show and it’s a turning point that will take a few months to really bed in. I couldn’t destory over a years worth of work and it would of been costly to the show if I had done that. Through lots of hard and work and dedication from the team, I’ve been able to subtly adjust parts of current and up coming storylines that I didn’t agree with but it’s by no means perfect. We’re not quite there yet but hopefully from Christmas and New Year onwards, the viewers will notice a big shift in the shows focus.”

You’ve been credited as executive producer for a while now. Does the work on screen at the moment fully represent your vision, or will it take time for the full picture to come together?
“As I said, it does take time for my vision of the programme to fully come into frutation but I tried to have an almost immediate impact when I came in, and when I began being credited in July, everything from that point on and had my seal of approval. But I think my best work is still yet to come.”
On the topic of immediate impact, what exactly did you change in those first few months after you took over?
“Certain casting decisions were made very quickly. For example, I decided that Lindsey Coulson wouldn’t depart alongside Patsy Palmer whose exit I decided to make semi-permanent. You can never say never as far as characters like Bianca are concerned but for the time being, while Patsy’s kids are still young, I think her mind is at home. I also put a stop to Charlie Brooks’ exit as I think she’s too important to let go at this point and better option for the storyline would be for Steve John Shepard to leave his role. I brought Laurie Brent back as Jane Clarke as I think she’s left a hole since her departure and I extended Sophie Lawrence’s stay on the Square and brought in family for her character Diane. And obviously Jessie Wallace and I came to arrangement early on that while she’d return to the soap, she would allowed to leave again after her current storyline had run it’s course.”

So an interview took place on September 24th to celebrate the EP's birthday (MINE! YAY!), you get to decide the questions.

So what would you like to ask the EP of (Alternate) Eastenders?
