I actually thought it was ok, I think the idea was it was supposed to be cheesy and look a bit naff. I watched it because my dad pointed out that The guy playing Citizen Khan went to the same secondary school as I did, although was 4 years above me lol.

That's supposed to be a joke. Perfect Muslim family with daughter who is a perfect Muslim at home, then takes her hijab off when she is out
Again - done better in Bend It Like Beckham...

Yeah, but she's wearing a lot of make up and the hijab in the home at the same time. Is that usual/part of the joke?

Bend it like Beckham was based on a Sikh family, not a muslim one

There were some OK/good jokes ("You can't be Muslim because you're ginger!")

Someone already said it but the show shouldn't have focused on his family life, I preferred the few interactions he had outside his home.

He was brilliant in My Family, he made that show imo, went downhill after he left.
I know right?

I thought he'd be more well know from there.

But it's nice to see him do a sitcom again (Despite everything)

The boy who played an Asian looked white too.
Looked white because he had light skin? he wasn't white.

Anyway, back to the actual sitcom in question, It was dreadful whether you use the Pakistani/Muslim/Asian angle...

Citizen Kane is shiite
Bugger me 5 years and it took this to get you to post, you must really hate it.

Anyway saw the last 10 minutes, poor no laughs to be had here, feels really old middle of the road.
I bet the character was funnier when it was on Bellamy's people, not that I liked that.

I quite like it. It has had some funny lines.
I quite liked it too.
We seem to be in the minority then as I quite liked it too. It wasn't belly laughs but there were moments that made me smile.

Yes and yes, Adil Ray was on BBC Breakfast one morning who said that was the impression it was supposed to give.

I didn't think it was THAT bad. Better than anything Gervais has ever pulled out of his arse, anyway.

From what I've heard on Radio 4's Loose Ends it's based around the family interaction.
Kriss Marshall is good on Radio 4 as Samuel Pepys, can't remember what else he's been in.

This had disaster written all over it before it even went out and I'm sorry to say it was. Epic fail!

Whoever commissioned this dross should be banished from TV land forever. Don't they do pilots anymore? Can we believe that no one saw how wrong this was? There was absolutely nothing redeeming about this show and if the BBC has any sense they will spare us and shunt it to a graveyard slot.

How many times BBC? Even by the law of averages they should be having the odd hit but it just seems like one disasterous 'comedy' after another.

Although it was rubbish I quite enjoyed it in a nostalgic way. It reminded of some of the silly stuff that was on when I was a kid. 'Mind Your Language' springs to mind. Mr Khan had Ali's suit and fez on 30+ years later.

The worst attempt at a PC sitcom was (in my opinion) that Jasper Carrott one where he was married to (I think) Meera Syal. That was set in Brum too but it was worse than this, I think. I think the characters may be likeable in this once you get into it and suspend disbelief at the OTT accents, etc.

Well it's not as if there aren't Mr Kahn's wandering around dressed just like the character in real life.
The tie joke made me smile with the choice of 2 70's brown ties.

Yes he did. I do wonder whether the fuss over 'Mind Your Language' was justified. I have some Indian friends and they liked it as they were growing up and remember it fondly. Same goes for 'It aint 'arf hot, mum'.

No belly laughs, but amusing in places and definitely not as bad as many as saying.

Tbh I actually prefer it to a few other comedies that I don't find even remotely funny, but others seems to love, i.e. "The Royle Family", "Gavin and Stacey" and "Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps".

One poster said that "Citizen Khan" has no redeeming features. I disagree. It has one important redeeming feature:- Keith Lemon's not in it.

I'd have thought 10.20pm (10.35pm next week) on Monday was pretty much a graveyard slot.

I actually liked it. It's certainly no classic, and it's very broad and unsubtle humour, but I did find quite a bit of it funny. I fancied the daughters too, which is always a help, I find.

Citizen Khan was recommended to me by someone on Twitter so I gave it a go despite catching a glimpse of an AWFUL trailer for the series. And guess what? I liked it.

You could be forgiven for switching off during the first ten minutes since it seemed awkward whilst taking time to get used to the characters and the situation - the best jokes were obviously saved for later - but once it had warmed up there were some genuine laugh-out-loud comedy moments plus all the plot ends were neatly wrapped up at the end. Some jokes were telegraphed miles away (such as the PA system) and a few would have been borderline racist under different circumstances, but there was enough real comedy substance on offer to make the whole thing really promising, all things considered. Definitely watching next time

But was it racist? The use of larger-than-life British Asian characters might raise a few hackles with some, but you can't honestly accuse racism on the pretext of employing stereotypical characters, especially when you have Only Fools And Horses based on Cockney stereotypes, The Vicar of Dibley sending up the Anglican church and Keeping Up Appearances poking fun at middle class snobs, etc., so it must be judged on the strength of comedy alone unless there are real grounds for concern.

After all, you don't accuse My Family of being racist just because it's a rubbish sitcom, do you?

Never said it was racist... just that it's crap.

Some people are politicising it and accusing those involved in reverse racism because the family are Asian. Like you said it was crap, there's no need to justify why, lol

Wow, just....wow

For a moment I thought I was watching a 1970s sitcom on ITV3.

Beyond the pale of awful. It actually made In With the Flynn's look like Emmy award winning writing.
