Did Diana change the X Factor?
I'm not sure if this sounds silly, so apologies if it does but before Diana appeared on the X Factor, I always class the first four years as the boring ones. I know they had very good talent etc but comparing it to the latter years (who clearly arent as talented), and Diana was probably the first contestant who was touted as so relevant and different etc (even though she wasn't, but for the show she was)... I wonder if we would have gotten the likes of Cher Lloyd, Misha B, Janet Devlin etc if Diana had never appeared on the show.
I doubt I'm explaining myself well, but even the rest of that year was filled with boring people in Austin, Scott, Eoghan, Daniel, Girlband, Bad Lashes... Even the likes of Alexandra and Laura weren't really anything different for the show. I'm in no way slating them as they were both fantastic talents who deserve alot of success, I just mean in terms of the show.. |

I don't think Cher Lloyd and Misha B necessarily relate to Diana, but I can understand the Janet reference. Who knows, really?

I think in terms of being different with Misha and Cher relate to Diana. Had Diana not been on the show, I don't think the likes of Cher would have been put through.

I don't think Diana can be related to the ones you mentioned, But I do think Diana was probably the first 'different' contestant to come along. X-Factor 5 was probably my overall favourite series. It had so much stiff competition, a lot of big singers and then mixed in the middle of it all was Diana - who was obviously the clear favourite from the start. I do think she may have opened the doors to people being quirky and not having the straight forward belting vocals
She's actually one of the x-factor contestants that I forget was even on the show because she's taken the opposite path that most contestants take. Rebecca Ferguson will probably end up being like Diana in that sense |

I think what he's trying to say is that Diana was at least the first successful "different" artist and that her success may or may not have encouraged people to come with something "unique" about them like Cher and Misha.

I think Leona was the first contestant to make the show seem more credible as her success broke the myth that contestants from these sort of shows in this country cannot become an international hit.

Yes, I think Leona broke the mould that a girl can win by her talent, rather than a middle aged looking 23 year old that needed Scotland to get behind her. Leona won at a time when normally you had to be a white, heterosexual male to win, even though she could go toe toe with any act from American Idol.
She actually should have auditioned on Idol and not our show in my opinion. Diana broke a similar mould - that of a quirky girl singer more in tune with Dolores O'Riordan and Cyndi Lauper than Leona's ballady soft soul music. Once these doors are open it's easier for the likes of Janet and Bo Bruce to follow a similar path. However we haven't really had a quirky singer actually win so far so that battle is still on. |

I remember around the time everyone was raving on how current and unique she was; before her it was maybe all about technique and belting but I guess diana brought something different to the game that allowed people who had something other than belting and perfect vocals to the x factor.
like cher and mishas rapping, the janets and even rebecca fergusons of the competition, you could say that even though there vocals aren't hitting every note under the sun, they have the x factor (cheesy...) I guess this might be biased though, as she was the first contestant I actually cared for. |

If The Voice had been around she would have slotted in there nicely as yes she was more artistic than most had been at that time.
Whilst not Necessarily the best or ''different'' she was different enough to get people into more alternative pop interested and added a level of credibility to it and opened up another side to the X factor that of the token Artistic/Different/Indie person Aiden, Cher, Janet, Matt etc so i think in a rund about maybe she did. |

i think this was the year they first experimented with casting 'types' of act rather than putting through various acts aimed at a certain audience.
Likewise I think the series with Joe McElderry was the year they first (that is, the producers) put in a lot of acts to the finals who looked probably in with a chance at winning it. In the earlier serieses there were always 4 or 5 acts into the finals who were clearly fodder...although last series have been like that too - Jonjo? FYD (what kind of a name is that anyway?) for example.. |
