Anyone older than fifty would thrash housemates in the electrocution tasks. It was a way of life for us.

I remember the shirts, and they weren't cheap!

I don't think I ever had any nylong sheets but my mum did and she thought they were great, dry before you knew it! We weaned her off them fairly quickly though - they were either bright yellow or purple as far as I recall

It's not really long in the scheme of things from that, to fighting to see who can produce the highest thread count in cotton sheets

The jingle should have been *sings* "rael brook toplin melts on the iron"
My brother had one of these and the collar stuck out like cow horns if you didn't attempt to iron it, and ten minutes afterwards if you did.
I bet it isn't a coincidence that deodorant became popular at the same time as nylon shirts.

I've never got through it. I came across To Have and Have Not (Bogart Bacall) on telly a while back and thought that was the real deal--superb old movie.

At my boarding school we had starched sheets that were like cardboard, and it used to take a few days to break them in.

Our beds were very hard. Thin mattress, with a few planks underneath. As a result I have always preferred hard beds; but this has backfired on me since I went thin, because now I wake up with rib ache in the mornings from lying on my side.

It's hard to believe the craze for nylon in retrospect. In the seventies I used to wear Marks and Spencer purple nylon underpants, with which you could pick up scraps of paper but not women. There are still some strange materials about; I bought a not cheap shirt from M&S online last year which contains 59% modal, whatever that is. Unwearable thing: is "modal" another name for nylon?

It is similar to rayon and made of cellulose fibre. It will absorb sweat and it is used in top end fake fur coats in an attempt to replicate breath-ability and warmth (it doesn't but its much better than polyester). It is used mostly now in a similar way to viscose, to give a fluidity and softness to the fabric but its a bugger to iron.

Can't stop laughing. One of my FB friends has autocorrect on her ipad and she posted this morning that she had just enjoyed 'coitus', instead of coffee. She didn't notice and has come back from work to a lot of rather shocked "TMI's".........

Thanks everyone for all your comments, and no halla it doesn't sound pervy at all - if they weren't my sons I'd say the same

There will be loads more of me and OH when the professional ones come back. The photographer was a guy in his, possibly early 70s, hard to tell exactly, with a 30-ish lady assistant (No Den, it wasn't Paul Daniels and The Lovely Debbie) He's been a fashion photographer among many genres in his career, his portfolio for weddings is most impressive. However, he flirted outrageously with both me and my sister - once he'd chatted to me and got a feel for the day and the family I suppose.

I told him that he could air brush and photo shop my pics as much as he liked, but he said that can be difficult if you end up with the bride looking older than her mother

He told me that I shouldn't be concerned as I'm ' a beautiful woman' and when I told OH he said 'well what did you expect him to say, you're a raddled old bat but I'll do my best'

Still loving Julian by the way and I've only just realised that the eviction is tomorrowt
You've made me well up now - with tears of laughter. And how are OH's bruises healing now JoJo?

JoJo, both your daughter's dress and your suit , are stunning!

Well as it's ok for the womenfolk to perv over JoJo's sons, I'll perv over JoJo's daughter.

Yes, I've been suspecting it was a version of viscose, another no no material for me. Can't beat cotton and wool as far as I'm concerned, but I don't mind a bit of acrylic in the short term (gets out of shape in the end). I dislike polyester intensely.

I had a brushed nylon effect nighty when i was eight. It sort of expanded outwards and i ended up using it as a maternity jumper three times.

Hello striing

I missed out on these sheets thankfully. I remember plastic covered mattresses in a skanky hotel in France once - not good when you've got sunburn and your skin sticks to it. Ouch!

can we petition DS for autocorrect on here too? Sounds like fun!

Did anyone see the thing on telly yesterday with the latest whatchamacallit voice activated gadget phones not recognising the Scottish accent....? Twas very funny.

It's like predictive text, she would have typed in co........and it randomly chose that word. She was in a hurry, off to work and didn't notice.
I asked her if she had had time to finish her coffee as, if not, it would have been coitus interruptus.....

I really do not like people swearing on their children's lives, as Jasmine did yesterday. I have never done it, and one reason is that I know how often I am mistaken about things; I am no longer certain of the truth of anything, even of things I have done or not done, said or not said. No one can be.

But what does it mean anyway, to swear on your children's lives? I suppose it is the new "swear to God", but what have children to do with religious oaths? I mean, in theory if Christians swear to God or on the Bible, they believe they will be punished by God if they are telling a lie. By what belief system, however, does lying while swearing on your children's lives have any negative consequences attached to it? The bogeyman is not going to come and do away with them, for example. It is meaningless, but also manipulatively emotive; it blackmails people into believing you because they would not want to impugn your love for your kids.
