ITV1 is just another digital channel, Only BBC1 has a royal audience now. Paralympics should take daytime ratings too

If you took the C5 figures in isolation for the past few days you wouldn't have a clue from those that their nearest rival had this big event TV piece running. Indeed CBB was actually up over 300k week-on-week last night. The 9/11 doc also performed above average for its timeslot.

Yes, the paralympics, but only ITV seemed to be hit badly...

So The Wright Stuff/Paralympics could do better then Jeremy Kyle

Channel 4's problem is that it's doing it with the Paralympics, it's ratings are poor without it.

I don't know why ITV keep dropping these random Sunday Coronation Street's into the schedule. They don't work.

I thought that record had now gone, wasn't it narrowly beaten by Downton Abbey last Christmas?

I watch Sky News and they're covering the Paralympics like they did the Olympics. When they do the papers, the front pages seem to be plastered with Paralympics stories.

Perhaps with all this media attention, C4 might be hoping for better figures.

It seems the media believe (or want us to believe) we're all watching the Paralympics, when relatively few of us are.

The Doctor Who episode last Saturday has already time-shifted 1m.

Quote:
“Tom Spilsbury ‏@TomSpilsbury

Dr Who's overnight rating was 6.4m, but after one day's timeshifting it's already gone up to 7.4m. I wonder what the final figure will be...”

It's because they lost 2 episodes because of the football on Friday. I assume they had to air them last night or they'd mess up the sequence. They're doing it again next week too.

C4 couldn't have asked for more really coverage wise.

The media has really upped the ante today. This controversy involving Oscar Pistorius is making headlines everywhere.

Can only bode well for further upward growth for today's Paralympics broadcasts.

And, as a commercial broadcaster, ITV should indeed be worried.

Things are shaping up very interesting for next Sunday. Hour long Corrie and X-Factor on ITV1 against the Closing Ceremony on Channel 4. Also Countryfile and George Gently on BBC1. I think there is some interesting potential here.

I can't see the Paralympics closing ceremony matching the opening simply because of the level of competition it faces. The opening ceremony basically had bugger all, whereas on Sunday it has all the stuff you've mentioned, plus there's a brand new series of Dragons Den starting that night on BBC2, ITV also have a new drama after XF and there are several big offerings on multichannel.

I can see the Closing Ceremony averaging about 5m, with the other shows being dented. XF will probably be helped by the Corrie lead-in which should reduce the dent a little though.

Not the best of weeks for a weakening X Factor to branch out to its beloved Sunday 8pm slot. It's saying something that we are even studying its competition this hard, as normally it's a foregone conclusion that it will demolish everything else in its path.

But, the way things are going, a new series low looks increasingly likely next weekend.

I kind of agree, I have heard numerous times now that 'the Paralympics have captured the imagination/hearts of the entire nation'. The figures really don't show that.

Nope, Downton Abbey (Christmas Day, ITV1 & ITV1 HD) live = 7.521m, Consolidated = 11.594m, timeshift of 4.073m
Doctor Who (The Impossible Astronaut, 23rd April'11) Live = 4.748m Consolidated = 8.859m, timeshift of 4.111m

So, DW Impossible Astronaut is still the most time shifted programme ever.

Thought you might want to know, looking at the latest data, with another day's playback viewing included, it's audience has gone up to 7.4m, so we've added another 1m. Obviously, there are usually diminishing playback factors as the days go on, but DW is a different beast to usual shows in terms of timeshifting so who knows...the opening episode of last season is still to this day the most time-shifted programme ever so dont discount anything.”

Not including the opening ceremony, the reach (3min+) for paralympic programming now stands at nearly 28m individuals...so people are watching, just watching bits here and there.

I don't buy this excuse at all.

Plus if ITV didn't have so many soap hours throughout the week they wouldn't put themselves in this position.

If Channel 4 was covering The Olympics the averages would be higher. But for The Paralympics and it being on Channel 4 I'd say they're great figures.

Nice stat. Not far off C4's typical weekly reach for all programming of around 30m. Except achieved in 4 days!

I think ITV are pulling out a few soap half hours to bolster Sunday and just like Doctor Who erratic scheduling means the Sunday live audience drops. Plus I wonder if many people knew it was there. People are out of the habit of watching Corrie on Sunday. I also think with so many episodes and ITV relying too much on soap half hours, the impact of them outside weekdays has weakened.

Suspect most recordings will have been watched by the end of Sunday. I can't see it clearing 8m on that basis.

Like everything else on here, it depends on your choice of definition. I think most regard "timeshift" as the difference between the reported overnight and consolidated figures, not "actual live" and consolidated. From overnight figures, it's Downton that wears the crown.
