It wasn't on after it was dark this week.

Well, Lorraine Kelly started her career as a journalist and joined TVam as a reporter so presumably she still remembers all her training. It's no different to when she was presenting TVam and GMTV. Aled Jones might not be the most heavyweight figure but neither was Ben Shephard when he was on GMTV. And they've got a newsreader and various reporters. If TVam could cope with the Gulf War, Daybreak can cope with anything.

It'd be interesting to see how well Citizen Khan and The Chase do, as well as Newsround (on BBC1 before Pointless).

GGGBOF seems a bit racy for Aled, although might be appropriate when the ratings vs BBC Breakfast come out.

Ditto your "sinking ship" reference....

He could have done a lovely O For The Wings of a Dove when reporting on the Opening Ceremony, or perhaps he is saving that for the next round of Middle East peace talks.

Only no I don't think they were. The comment was made in direct response to a criticism of the overnight performance, uses the phrase 'official ratings' and then goes onto make a separate point about the average viewership.

Quote:
“Re: Downton/Midwife - It's impossible to say at this time...I don't see why you have to bring different shows, with different slots/demos etc. into this. We could say "The soaps lose 3m viewers during the summer. What happens if News at 10 loses 3m in the autumn?" It isn't comparable nor is it relevant.”

It isn't impossible to say we're all perfectly aware of what the reaction would be if any other show were to drop 2+ million viewers half way through its run. But again this is another aspect of Doctor Who which gets a free ride and whenever it gets brought up people go into spin mode. 'It does it every year'. 'It gets the audience back'. Except the second one isn't entirely fair given that for a couple of series the more accurate description might be that the audience spikes for the final episode or two. And in the case of series 5 drops right back down for the season finale.

And yes how foolish to suggest we attribute Doctor Who's rating patterns to other shows to point out some of the general double standard that exists around judging the shows ratings. Obviously how people would react to other shows doing similar things to Doctor Who has no relevance to a point that people apply a ridiculous double standard when judging Doctor Who's numbers.

I'd also point out that every summer when the soaps drop viewers people point it out and tend to make comments about how low they look and that they aren't performing as well as they should. Doctor Who does it and its just part of the normal ratings pattern. A normal fluctuation. Lets not point out that a show losing 2+ million people half way through its run basically every year probably isn't a good thing.

New Tricks 6.94m
Mothers Son 4.54m

(Jake Kanter)

Big drop for Tricks, big flop for Clunes. Suspect the Paras damaged NT more than Son though, tbh..

4.54m isn't really a big flop, I'm sure trickytree would tell us this time tomorrow how Monday's episode would have already timeshifted to over 5m....

Seriously though, I think it did well given how ITV programmes have crashed and burned in the past week or so against weaker opposition, and how ITV haven't done well against New Tricks for many years.

Not exactly a big flop now is it. In light of the competition I'd say that was a decent rating.

Mothers Son was 5m inc +1 and Paul O Grady was 4.4m inc +1. Finally some success for ITV.

Good guess that man for A Mother's Son. 4.54m is no flop against New Tricks. A good rating for Paul O'Grady too. The Monday EastEnders counter programming by ITV has done rather well in recent times.

Finally some decent ratings for Paul O'Grady on ITV. Hopefully now they will put him to good use and have him back on our screens more often As for A Mothers Son, 5 million isn't bad, only half a million or so off what I predicted. Totally forgot it was against New Tricks, which looking at some of the previous overnights its scored thats a bit of a rocky start, hopefully it will timeshift well. Wondering how last nights CBB did, considering it is in its final week and the housemates have turned against Julie Goodyear, it should make some interesting television! (I'm sure however, some if you will disagree, must be your age.. )

Can't say I'm surprised when Paul O'Grady's Battersea Dogs Home documentary did so well.

It looks like the Paralympics hurt Emmerdale and The One Show, because both BBC1 and ITV1 are low at 19:00.

Poor night for BBC One, looks like New Tricks IS in hot water.
ITV1's drama bet has paid off rather brilliantly. Great rating there.

Good prediction DMN!

A good night for ITV and a pretty poor looking one for BBC One, Tricks or no Tricks. That must be down pretty heavily down on last year.

6.86m (29.2%) for Eastenders.
6.94m for New Tricks.

So even with the lower rating New Tricks still beat EE.
Poor for Eastenders.

I think the weather also played a part. It was still very warm in London and the south east at 7pm last night.

The Monday 8pm slot is just an extended ad break for ITV die hards between the two Corries. If they put on something cosy, milky and warm, it will keep the core demographic on the sofa. Some fluff featuring O'Grady and dogs seems perfect.

It will be the PGs that dented EE (and NT).

Decent retention for Khan - 2.8m very good in later slot on worknight. It is doing better than MBB was at this stage. And it's rather good, too.

Oh dear. Poor for Daybreak- their one saving grace is that most kids go back to school today or tomorrow. Their audience may pick up a little then.

Mm, BBC1 was down, but it still won the peak time battle, despite ITV running an hour and a half of soap and a Martin Clunes drama. So, "poor" probably isn't the word.

In other news...the new Daybreak launched with an average of 600,000.

1.9m for CBB.
