And again why are those viewers more relevant and important? This idea that Doctor Who's timeshift is bigger and thus more important is nonsense. New Tricks is adding additional viewers via timeshift and catch-up services. If there's an insistence that those viewers be counted and precounted when discussing Doctor Who's ratings why shouldn't that same principle apply to any and every other drama on television?

“Because (probably) they come from a "more important" (ie younger) demographic?”
And why does that matter? We aren't discussing the audience profile we're discussing the raw number. The argument isn't that Doctor Who's timeshift is important because that's how young viewers watch. The argument is Doctor Who's timeshift is important because it takes it from 5-6 million to 7-8 million. And presumably those same younger more technically savy viewers are also the ones who timeshift New Tricks?

“Because we haven't had any hint about NTs timeshift this year yet? Whereas DW has already reached over 7.4m after one days timeshifting.”
We didn't know that on Sunday morning when posts about Doctor Who's overnight were followed by variations on 'it'll timeshift to...' and 'it'll add another 2 million'.

“Because there have been high profile arguments about the direction that NT is moving in, hence some people wondering if a relatively poor overnight rating would mean the end of the show (only when the officials come out will we know if that pessimism is justified).”
This is an hilarious point. Have I just imagined the high profile and repeated arguments regarding the direction Doctor Who has taken under Moffat and the not small public push this year that these episodes aren't about a story arc and are big stand alone episodes?

None of this is what I'm saying. Or Andy Parish. Or DMN. If some people are spouting baloney about New Tricks being in trouble, let them. Doesn't mean we should apply the same moronic standard and say the same about Doctor Who.”
A collection of some posts from the past few days covering Doctor Who, New Tricks and EastEnders that highlight some of what I'm saying here. If I were to go back a week or two to when I had a similar conversation regarding Doctor Who's overnight performance I'd find more.

The problem is that the quite clear argument is that it doesn't matter to the same degree that Doctor Who's does. There have even been people that have attempted to explain to me why Doctor Who's timeshift audience is more important than New Tricks (see some of the stuff I've responded to in this post).

If anything the evidence so far suggests that the timeshifts would become greater still.”
The counter point to this argument is that we don't know how consistent the Doctor Who audience is in terms of returning viewers. We don't for example know how many new viewers Doctor Who attracts from year-to-year. Its entirely possible that viewers have transitioned from live to timeshift/iPlayer to not at all and just been replaced by new viewers. If that's the case then there's an argument to be made that actually eventually new viewers will stop tuning in and the numbers just go down. Equally if Doctor Who isn't attracting new viewers year-on-year that's potentially a big problem as well. Its something of a lose-lose situation unfortunately.
Without the full range of information its impossible to really get into all of this stuff and predict future viewing etc.

Doctor Who's ratings performance shouldn't be immune from criticism. After all, it gets more coverage in the media than pretty much any other show on TV outside of soaps and The X Factor, and in this massive year for the BBC, if anything more was expected from it.”
This.

I asked it a week and a half/two weeks ago and got largely shouted down by a wave of 'it doesn't matter just as long as people watch' (with a few exceptions).

“Now, as far as I'm aware, BARB would strip out 'second-time' watchers. Anyone know for sure?”
That's my understanding.

“As I said above, lots of reasons, and it's a genuinely interesting phenomenon. But the one thing I DON'T think it suggests is that people are losing interest altogether. If that were the case, we'd see fewer timeshifters, not more.”
As above unless timeshifters that are ditching are being replaced by new timeshifters.
