Well they are. And it's holding up very well against tough competition and is on it's way to getting an official of 2.4m. Not bad for a show in it's 27th series. (incl all the series).

Moving onto last night, BBC One was dented across the board it seems last night with Paralympics, Paul O'Grady's programme and A Mother's Son, but still had a 22 percent share. New Tricks rating may be a little low, but in the grand scheme of things, its overnight is still one of the highest rating for a drama this year, and ratings won't determine whether it will get axed or not. That would be a 'natural end' reason seeing as New Tricks could easily drop another million and still stay, unless it costs a lot, which I don't think it will. Someone compared Citizen Khan's rating with Mrs Brown's Boys rating for Series 1. I'm not sure I particularly agree with the comparison as Mrs Brown's Boys I think increased every time during Series 1, whereas Citizen Khan has already dropped. Okay, there is the Bank Holiday factor, but it shall be interesting to see if it holds up and secure a Series 2 commission.
Unusually poor Monday night for BBC Two. University Challenge did well, but apart from that, not much to smile about elsewhere. Given that their 40th anniversary next month, I haven't seen anything to suggest that it is going to rise majorly for next month. Does anyone know if trailers are going to be starting to air for it in the next few weeks? Even if the storylines are pretty bad, promoting it a lot in the next month and a bit should guarantee at least 8m+ for their live episode in October (I would hope so anyway, given the major success of EastEnders and Coronation Street's anniversaries). The Mother's Son did very well against New Tricks, we've seen in the past dramas squashed there, it was well documented here how it killed The Bill off. Yesterday's episode should timeshift to ~6m, although I still expect tonight's episode to drop off the usual 1 million to ~3.6m - it could, ironically, win the slot though as Accused's ratings trajectory has been heading south.

Salv, does the 27 series include Teen Big Brother and Celebrity Hijack? There's been so many BB series and it's still doing very well!
13 regular series, 10 celebrity series, 1 Celeb Hijack, 1 Teen BB, 1 panto BB and 1 Ultimate BB.
It does such good business for a show that has had so many series. It is up around 700k on the last 2 regular series and only around 200k down on the last CBB series (which aired in January).

It was a specific commission for E4 for though wasn't it and not something they're co-financing with another broadcaster? Potentially the best route to survival for a show like Beaver Falls is going to be reducing the cost of the show for E4 and one of the easiest ways for the production company to do that is to sell it internationally and get other broadcasters on board in covering the costs of production. The concern would be that E4 is basically covering the bulk if not the entire production cost and I don't see how they can do that at the levels we've seen so far this year. Unless its spectacularly cheap which doesn't seem entirely likely...
I think this is something that the commercial sector of the industry is going to have to grapple with more and more as we move forward. Either production companies will have to start taking bigger gambles on back end revenue (DVD sales etc.) and lowering the cost to broadcasters or they're going to have to start being more focused on international sales.

The discussion wasn't exclusive to Doctor Who this morning though and was in part related to New Tricks rating and the perception of it. Not to mention the general perception and nature of timeshift.

It was also getting much higher overnights as a result of having no real competition. Potentially there's an argument to be made that now the audience has other options on the night of broadcast more will seek alternative ways to watch the show. That's speculation at this point though obviously.

Sometimes you just need to accept that continuing the debate is not going to help anyone or anything. The fact is I agree with you on the Doctor Who ratings discussion but repeating you point over and over won't change the minds of the people your arguing with and will only annoy everyone else who is sick of the same posters arguing the same things for pages and pages.

Well, it does. Not only that but it is now skewing slightly younger. Older viewers have been peeling off and been replaced by younger viewers, that's quite healthy for a show that can renew itself every few years. So how is that spin?
Just look at the series averages. If and when it actually starts to loose viewers over a set time, I would be the first to acknowledge this. But it ant happened yet.

Well those people obviously don't understand how ratings work then. Anyone who reads these thread/studies the data should know why this happens. It's a perfectly normal viewing trend.

Jeez! I haven't got a problem with pointing that fact out! My point is whether it's relevant or worth discussing. And seen as the Doctor Who series average hasn't really changed during the last 7 years my answer would be no.

what ever the once respect Broadcast have to say, Daybreak revamp is nothing but flop, ok so maybe it needs a month to bed it, but 606k is not a good start, I wonder what its going to take for ITV to put the show out of its misery.

Since series 4 the show has lost 500k off of its average. Between series 5 and 6 alone it lost 200k. In reality series 4 is the only year where there's been growth in Doctor Who's series average. Every other year its been down by about 200k (with the exception of series 4-5 which was down 300k). Now I'll admit that these aren't the radical year-on-year drops we've seen for something like The X Factor but the truth of the matter is that the average audience for Doctor Who is down. This talk of the averages being in 'roughly the same range' disguises the fact that the average audience has been down in year-on-year comparison all but once. It also misses that series 6 (just) had the lowest series average to date.
What might also be interesting is to look at year-on-year comparisons for the overnight averages. Series 2 was down 100k, series 3 was down 200k, series 4 was up 200k, series 5 was down 1.2 million and series 6 was down 300k. So with the exception of series 5 where there was an obvious massive shift to timeshift viewing the overnight average for the year hasn't been a million miles away from predicting the direction of the official series average (so that's something to consider this weekend).
So its absolutely fair to say that Doctor Who hasn't lost millions of viewers its not true to say that it hasn't lost any viewers. Now of course I fully expect someone to respond to all of this with 'iPlayer'. Which in some respects is a fair response but I don't believe we have the data to accurately look at those year-on-year nor is it entirely clear how much of that is repeat or complete viewing.

Reminds me of the good old days when the autumn season started and conceivably there would be something on all 4 channels at once - 9pm Sunday was a fair bet.
I would excitedly circle all my selections for the week so that mum, dad and sis could plan their disappointments/bedroom portable tv viewing accordingly!
It was easier at Christmas - more to watch, but only 3 channels to bother looking at in the guides.

On some PVRs (including the new Youview ones) you can go left, left, left on the EPG and it will let you watch those finished programmes via iPlayer etc!

My only argument regarding Doctor Who is whether the BBC are utilising the lead in effectively. Even taking into account that the overnight includes people who watched the show before 2am there must be a fair number of people watching BBC One who usually do not - the lottery seems a waste. Saying that, maybe they thought The X Factor was going to be more potent than it is this year so there was no point trying to use the lead in on a young skewing show.

I'm sure ITV are planning to cook up another of their wonder schedules which will include the first ever Emmerdale and a couple of 'Top 40' shows but if the viewers aren't that interested that's never going to work.
As for last night; I do wonder if New Tricks is nearing the end - not because of the ratings but because of the cast. They've already lost James Bolam and the other three have been moaning about the quality of the scripts
It may be best if they call it a day while it's on top rather than letting it slide - especially as George Gently has found a new lease of life though that will be tested by the heightened competition on Sunday.
A Mother's Son did well considering the opposition. Only Connect is a gem for BBC Four but I do think they should be looking to promote it to BBC Two as it would run well alongside University Challenge and/or Mastermind (sorry, I know I say this every week.) Celebrity Big Brother is holding it's audience nicely despite the increased opposition with the Paralympics, which is never going to hit the heights of the Olympics but is performing well for Channel 4. Maybe I'm watching at the wrong time but I haven't seen many promotions for new shows during the adverts which strikes me as strange. But, as I say, I may just be missing them.

I'm sure ITV are planning to cook up another of their wonder schedules which will include the first ever Emmerdale and a couple of 'Top 40' shows but if the viewers aren't that interested that's never going to work.
As for last night; I do wonder if New Tricks is nearing the end - not because of the ratings but because of the cast. They've already lost James Bolam and the other three have been moaning about the quality of the scripts

A Mother's Son did well considering the opposition. Only Connect is a gem for BBC Four but I do think they should be looking to promote it to BBC Two as it would run well alongside University Challenge and/or Mastermind (sorry, I know I say this every week.
) Celebrity Big Brother is holding it's audience nicely despite the increased opposition with the Paralympics, which is never going to hit the heights of the Olympics but is performing well for Channel 4. Maybe I'm watching at the wrong time but I haven't seen many promotions for new shows during the adverts which strikes me as strange. But, as I say, I may just be missing them.Finally, I want to add my thanks to D.M.N. and all those who add ratings to the thread.

No stats are available before 2009, so we don't know how many more people are now watching via the web that were previously watching David Tennants Doctor (series 4) on their tellies. The point about whether iPlayer viewers are primarily repeat viewers can also be applied to the "officials" (and to a lesser extent, VOSDALlers!).

I loved those 1980s/early 1990s autumn season launch weeks when on BBC1 alone, there'd be a stack of new series on Saturday night, a couple of new dramas and a couple of new sitcoms on Sunday, umpteen other new shows during week, including a few sitcoms. Happy days.

Paralympics seem to be affecting some BBC One and ITV1 programmes more than others.

I don't get Daybreak; why broadcast a downmarket version of Breakfast? People will just gravitate to the real thing.
ITV put all their eggs in the Chiles and Bleakley basked - and very expensive eggs they were too. Once they failed they had little else they could do.
For me the channel needs to look at something along the lines of the Big Breakfast; something completely different from Breakfast which will attract a difference audience rather than fighting for the same people.
I presume the England vs Sweden match in June still remains ITV1's most watched show of the year so far?

For many years the BBC had a hard news format against TV-am and GMTV. Maybe ITV should try that?
