[url]- Another big announcement - BBC has ordered game show Britain's Brightest to launch in early 2013. It's described as an "intelligence test show" and a "smart entertainment" series.
I suspect that means that The Voice wont be in Q1 next year then.

This seems to have gone under the radar

Autumn Leaves (w/t), 6 x 30 mins,A brand new sitcom for BBC One created by and starring David Walliams and written by Walliams with The Dawson Brothers.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2012/danny-cohen-mgeitf.html

Quirke, 3 x 90 mins, adapted by screenwriters Andrew Davies and Conor McPherson, a co-production between BBC Drama Production with Element Pictures and Tyrone Productions

Based on the books by Benjamin Black (pseudonym of award-winning Irish writer John Banville), Quirke is a new series starring Gabriel Byrne in the title role. Quirke is the chief pathologist in the Dublin City Morgue – a charismatic loner whose job takes him into unexpected places as he uncovers the secrets of sudden death in 1950s Dublin.

Or perhaps they're planning to run it alongside The Voice?

It may not even be for Saturday night. Unless they've announced otherwise of course. Britain's Brightest is a terrible name though.

BBC never run two major entertainment shows on the same night.
We'll just have to wait and see. Like when we had to wait for NBC to confirm that there would be a fall season of the Voice. A possibility you continually rubbished on here.

- Another big announcement - BBC has ordered game show Britain's Brightest to launch in early 2013. It's described as an "intelligence test show" and a "smart entertainment" series.
More info here:
The Brightest Briton (w/t), 4 x 75 and 2 x 60, made by RD.

New Saturday night game-show that will scour the country to find the most intelligent person in Britain. Contestants from all walks of life will battle it out to become The Brightest Briton.

With intelligence tests and show stopping games, brain power will be tested rather than general knowledge and the competitors will encounter a foreboding barrage of mental tests to prove they have what it takes to be Britain’s brightest. (four weeks of heats, a semi-final and a final)

Executive producer for RDF is Peter Usher and Mirella Breda for the BBC. Commissioned by Mark Linsey, BBC’s Controller of Entertainment and Danny Cohen.
Should do well, and there doesn't seem to be any potential for embarrassment as seen with there other attempts at Saturaday game shows.

This also caught my eye:
A major new drama talent strand, made by Working Title Television.

Distinctive and original drama from writers and directors entirely new to television, brought together for a unique returnable drama event that will play over five nights. Each series takes an inciting incident - a crime for example - and from this starting point, five different stories are told, in five distinctive and original voices. Each series will be guided by a master of the genre; exceptional authors who will mentor the new talent involved. This fresh approach to storytelling will bring entirely new voices to screen in a bold and entertaining drama event. Executive produced by Juliette Howell from Working Title TV and Lucy Richer at the BBC. Commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning and Danny Cohen.
Looks interesting, this is the kind of the thing the BBC should be doing imo.

- Danny confirms a new World War I drama about nurses called The Ark for the war's 100 year anniversary in 2014. Also a new detective series titled Quirke starring Gabriel Byrne. Big scoop!

Yawn, yawn, and thrice yawn.....

Nurses in war, no doubt cashing in on midwives post WWII, another 50s detective (Gabriel Byrne, Dublin, 50s, morgue - sounds cheery stuff...), and a dismally named Cowellised version of The Krypton Factor.

(Which might have ITV wondering why they haven't commissioned their own Cowellised version of The Krypton Factor)

Do not give them ideas - solve this puzzle inside 30 seconds or you get covered in smelly gunk. New series titled : The Crapped on Factor?

I suspect they'll probably mirror the reworked US format.
They're having spinning chairs in every episode.

BBC1’s The Voice will extend the ‘blind auditions’ of the early rounds to every episode of the second series in a bid to stop viewers tailing off.

The series will also feature fewer live shows, BBC entertainment commissioning controller Mark Linsey confirmed at the Edinbugh International Televsion Festival.

Linsey described the process, in which judges have their backs to performers and then spin their chair round if they are interested in taking them on, as the “great format twist” that every Saturday night entertainment hit needs.

“It’s the bit that went above our expectations,” he said. “For series two we’re looking at keeping them for every episode and having fewer live shows.

That's incredibly similar to what NBC were saying coming out of the second season in the US. Ultimately though they came to the conclusion that everyone else arrived at as soon as they said it – keeping the spinning chairs beyond the auditions doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. As I said before I think ultimately they'll adopt the same format NBC is using for season 3 of The Voice. Assuming the format works (which they'll have time to judge). There doesn't strike me as a whole lot else you can do with the show.

I'm also not sure how they're going to have fewer live shows for series two. Didn't the first run only have 5 or something like that? How on earth is that going to work?

Not strictly ratings related, but here's an astonishing stat that's come out of the TV Festival today:

Alex Farber ‏@alexfarber
50000 people watched all 13 episodes of Breaking Bad series 4 on Netflix on day it was released #edtvfest

Good to see that Law and Order UK has been renewed for 8 episodes in 2013. Though the delay in deciding has lost Freema Ageyaman to US TV and Harriet Walters to something else. The rest of the cast are staying.

Do we know what ITV's plans are for Saturday nights later this year?

There's an extra series of Take Me Out so I'm guessing that'll get the 7pm slot before X Factor?

Piers Morgan's Life Stories could continue in the Friday 9pm slot or move back to Saturdays after X Factor?

There's the Surprise, Surprise revival with Holly Willoughby as well. I think it's just a one off special but it's from ITV Studios so I'm guessing the special might get a trial run around X Factor to give it a boost?

so that equates to 50000 downloading the first episode (cos it's like a box of Pringles!!!)

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it lacks the potential for embarrassment. Perhaps not quite the obvious disaster of something like Don't Scare The Hare but there's a fairly long list of potential problems for a show like The Brightest Briton. The biggest one that strikes me is that because its being commissioned as a big Saturday night show they come over all Red or Black and go big purely for the sake of being big despite it adding nothing and often times highlight major flaws with the format. And they really, really need to change the name.

Looks interesting, this is the kind of the thing the BBC should be doing imo.
Didn't Jimmy McGovern oversee a project somewhat similar to this where he picked and worked with up and coming writers to pen one off dramas? I want to say Moving On but I could be wrong about that. None the less its a brilliant idea and it'll be interesting to see who comes aboard as 'mentors'. And on a related note the BBC could spin the behind the scenes process of this off into a weird reality series (that basically nobody will watch).

It's a complete travesty that Breaking Bad isn't broadcast in the UK. It's the best TV series since Six Feet Under. It's incredible.

That's because the fourth season is ridiculously addictive (and brilliant). Topped only by season five which is even better so far. I still cannot for the life of me understand why nobody airs this in the UK.

When it beats Mad Men to the Best Drama Emmy next month Sky are going to kick themselves.

I wonder if NBCUniversal wants to get Law and Order UK to syndication, it's currently at 39 episodes at the moment and the 8 episode renewal brings it up to 47 episodes. They need another 18 episodes to get to 65 episodes which would be enough to sell it for syndication purposes.

I can't wait to see it. I've just realised 4 hasn't landed here in the UK yet. (Coming September 1st)

So that stat must refer to Netflix in the US.

BBC Four has picked up Parks and Recreation! http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/lat...html#section-4
I talked about a number of new commissions in my session, including a major partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects to a celebration of the golden age of the album from Danny Baker, a year of comedy led by the acquisition of the hit US comedy Parks and Recreation and seasons exploring the curious world of insects and Britain’s foodie history.
So glad this has finally been picked up over here, and should have a home until it ends as I doubt they're expecting it to do much and it must be pretty cheap. It's one of the best, if not the best, US comedies at the moment and it was a crime no one was airing it over here.

That will please a lot of people over on the US subforum. That one and Community are the ones that get asked about constantly.

Parks is oddly a good fit for BBC Four which has a history of airing oddball comedy such as Flight of the Conchords, The Chaser's War on Everything etc

Fantastic news. The first season is (as it was with The Office US) a decidedly dodgy affair but from season two onwards its just pure gold and indeed one of the best comedies on US television right now.

So agreed. Those figures show theres a lot of demand. They WATCHED all 13! Thats better than Mad Men rated on Sky Atlantic ffs!

This is something Ch4 should have jumped on. Someone should have this show as a big part of their schedule.

Stick with it after the first season. It gets much, much better.

In other news I've just watched some of The CW's Oh Sit (musical chairs meets Wipeout) and I'm now absolutely terrified this is going to turn up on Saturday night television in the UK. Although maybe the fact that the BBC have pulled the plug on Wipeout will put people off...
