To be fair, it aired at 8.30 on BBC Two.

I think they're all at Edinburgh just now but it ends tomorrow afternoon (and the main bit is over tonight) so we should get ratings on Sunday. Even if there was no official update, I'm sure someone somewhere would have tweeted X Factor ratings (especially as the bank holiday usually provides one of the worst ratings of the series).

Speaking of which, BBC2 won Channel of the Year (beating ITV1 which won last year), BBC4 got digital channel, Talkback got the indie award, Sherlock was terrestrial programme of the year, Mad Men was digital programme of the year.

Miranda started life on BBC2 so the first series was probably written under the assumption that it would be on after 9pm as BBC2 was not known for pre-watershed comedy slots.

And it's no worse than something like Birds Of A Feather which always seemed to push the boundaries for a pre-watershed comedy with its saucy jokes and language.

And Only Fools on Sundays at 7.15 had the occasional "that's a bit rude" bit including a whole classic episode about blow-up sex dolls.

As I pointed out a few days ago, next week, when it's still August, BBC TV's drama output consists of Eastenders, Casualty, Holby City, Waterloo Road, Inspector George Gently, Murder, New Tricks, Accused, Vexed, Good Cop and Parade's End so I think we can forgive them the occasional heavy-on-repeats, height-of-summer evening, especially as the repeats (Question Of Sport, Miranda, Mrs Brown's Boys, Would I Lie To You) are a hell of a lot better than the shitty new stuff that's on tonight (The One Show, Eastenders, In With The Flynns).

Citizen Khan got lots of laughs at Edinburgh Festival today. Some say it could become the next Mrs Browns Boys in the ratings.

As I understand it, few (if any) imports can be shown on the iPlayer: Family Guy isn't on there, for instance.

The premise of the programme is rubbish, the trailer makes it look worse, the timeslot inspires little confidence.

All those things were true of Mrs Browns though.

I do think though that Khan will fail to find an audience and prove to be a big fat comedy flop!

Does BBC1 ever have a comedy flop? Even dire comedies seem to end up with 3-4m and get a second series.

I doubt 'In with the Flynns' would be back for a new series had it been on ITV1 for example.

I seem to remember a royally spectacular bomb featuring a much-loved comedy face last Christmas...

Jam and Jerusalem went below 3m for a couple of episodes during its second series in winter 2008 (abysmal in those days), although it recovered the following year.

Peter Fincham has brushed off the X Factor decline last weekend, says he wouldn't make any decisions based on one series and predicts it has years to run. Like Elaine Bedell, he identified an Olympic hangover and good weather as two issues against it. While I tend to agree they played some role, it does seem that nobody bothered to ask the obvious question of the man ultimately responsible for scheduling... "then why did you start it in the middle of August?".

There was a tricky moment for the BBC too. When discussion turned to "Leanne", the winner of The Voice, one panellist asked the BBC's entertainment chief Mark Linsey what her surname was. Somewhat unfortunately, he couldn't remember.

Syco are happy about the competition from The Voice and outgoing Head of TV Siobhan Greene believes they made a better series of BGT because of it . Whether or not she'd be saying that if The Voice hadn't tanked in the end, I'm not so sure! She also said "the opening part of The Voice was brilliant" but that it needs to produce successes to rival the likes of One Direction in order to "validate the process".

ITV1 not all bad then.

Leanne has already recorded her part in this Christmas' Celebrity Mastermind. She sat on the black chair, John Humphries said "Your name, please" and she replied "Pass".

Spoiler
No, not really.

Another Channel 4 gripe - the 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown special was brilliant tonight, but did anyone else even realise it was on? When I saw it on the EPG I thought it was a repeat of the one they did for C4's anniversary.

It's Mitchell, if anyone cares. It will be fascinating to see what they change in the new series, if it works, and if anyone will remember the winner.

I've seen a few ads for it over the past few days. But I forgot to record it! Luckily it's being repeated on 4seven in 20 minutes, so I've set to record it on that. 4seven is a really useful service, surprisingly.

Because that's when they always start it in order to finish at Christmas. (Yes, I know, "twice weekly auditions, yadda yadda yadda")

8 million might be poor by X Factor standards but still a great audience for ITV1. Although it only gets number 1 in the overnights for the whole ratings week if you include +1. Ignoring +1 it would be behind the Monday 8.30 Corrie.

Peter tends not to tell the whole truth at these things. Last year he backed Daybreak with Adrian and Christine.

Quote:
“Fincham is starting to squirm a bit. He's asked about last year's Edinburgh TV Festival, when he vowed to keep Chiles and Bleakley on Daybreak. That didn't turn out so well.

Considering you spent every Tuesday in January on here, highlighting how shockingly bad the ratings were. Surely you remember the Royal Bodyguard.

The convenience of memory loss.....

The first episode of the first series had a penis joke and that aired on BBC Two at 8.30pm, still pretty mild compared to some comedies.

In 2011, I think they had an extra five In It to Win It editions left over from the autumn 2010 series.

CBB is really pulling its weight, I think if Channel 5 had their way, they could get rid of normal BB and just have CBB twice yearly.

God no wonder they didn't bother releasing the days ratings NOTHING in primetime over 3million?

Some appalling ratings there. 1.5m for ITV1 at 9pm. Channel 4 not breaking 1m after 9pm. BBC1 win 9pm but with 2.75m.

Good night for Channel 5 and BBC2, though.
