People keep talking about 2009 as the record-breaking rating for The X Factor final, but surely it was 2010? The 2010 series was the one which had the highest average for the series too.

Normally Jenny's figures include +1, so it is 1m up week-on-week (average around 9.1m/9.7m therefore), share is identical to last week's peak.”

*phew* seems respectable enough- and it got that unprecedented and greatly needed rise from week one!

2009 was when it really broke out though, although yes, 2010 was the highest average for a series.

Regarding last night's The X Factor peak, it will still be 1 million down year-on-year.

Think it was. Series 6 had an average of 12m with overnights, and 13m with the official ratings. The averages of Series 7 aren't on Wikipedia but maybe someone can provide them. Series 7 also peaked with 19.4m compared to 19.1m in 2009, but the 19.4m peak includes HD.

True. I think 2009 was a break through year for Syco. Massive, massive buzz around BGT obviously and this kind of paved the way for a new, bigger X Factor. In 2009 it felt as if something huge was happening, in 2010 it had kind of a more established feel.

BBC3 repeated the last series just prior to the Olympics.

10.9 million peak seems respectable, a million up from last week which is pretty good, the question is, can it keep increasing?

The ratings are up on last week just as many expected but peak quoted and not average. Anyway it's up. As I said blame the very hot weather for the week 1 dip.

2009 was the year The X Factor's format really broke through and established itself, 2010 was the massive rating year which also coincided with really bad wintry weather leading to record ratings. 2010's bad weather also meant Strictly had a record year too.

These big (ish) numbers for individual programmes obscure the reality of ITV nowadays, no mucka is muckin' watching.

Apart from soaps and those heavily promoted things the ratings are generally terrible.

That's not a sustainable business. If it's making money at the moment it's at the expense of ITVs future.

So, including the +1 figures, it's up about 200k week on week.

And here speaks the truth.

Rather than "celebrating" great ratings for a show that lasts just a few weeks, perhaps ITV needs to address why, fifteen years ago, it was the most watched channel in the UK virtually every single day. But now a high profile programme like "Corrie Goes to Kenya" only gained one and a half million viewers and therefore suggests that ITV have such a limited range from shows it is now solely reliant on a handful. Once these handful of shows become tired and ratings fall, what on earth is the future of ITV?

When BBC 2 beats the major commercial broadcaster by over 2 million viewers on primetime Friday night, surely questions need to be asked? Another that needs asking is if Simon Cowell passed away tomorrow, who would create successful formats for ITV? No one has achieved it thus far.

The X-Factor
I'm A Celebrity......
BGT
Emmerdale
Coronation Street
Downton Abbey

These are the main cash cows during the course of a 12 month period. But is it enough?

So what conclusions do we draw from these ratings? Up on last week and top show for the night but a slow start for this series. Do we blame the Bank Holiday dip or does it have no excuse this week as the weather over much of the UK was worse?

Still low for X Factor. The weather was fairly poor here last night so they don't have the excuses of last week.

I can't remember the last time I saw the X factor post a 36% share tbh. Going to be interesting to see what affect the Paralympics will have on it and Doctor who next week. Even if the Paralympics only rate 2.5 to 3.5m a night, i suspect it will have some kind of effect.

Only 8.4million for XFactor on a cold, wet evening? This is a terrible rating. People are bored with it, even the hardcore fans on the forums are saying it's awful this year. It sounds like no effort has been made by Itv and Syco to correct the problems of last year, in fact they have introduced more problems like the slow pacing and Towie style interviews. We are all seeing an ex-TV juggernaut dying before our eyes!

And it's now obvious why The Mistress of Spin only quoted the "twin (ie, aggregated) peak". Because the average was woeful, a pitiful 300k increase on the 90f peaking heatwave weekend, despite the worst washout Bank Holiday in years.

It's too early to proclaim that TXF will suffer another year on year decline, but for those of us who wish for the whole Cowell empire to come crashing down, these are very encouraging opening overnights.

Lets hope the Olympics has whetted the nation's appetite for some real achievement, dedication and the end of instant z-lebrity culture.

It's diificult to judge when we are still in summer season, and ratings have been hit by a London Olympics (a once in 60 years occurrence) . If ITV is still losing the ratings battle during the autumn the questions will be valid.

The interim financial results don't suggest that it's a business in crisis, far from it in fact with a cash surplus of £92 million.

ITV would much rather be where they are today than the 2009 financial position.

ITV1 logged only 14.2% of viewing yesterday. Very low considering one of their big hitters was on. Last Saturday they had a much more respectable 16.7% but normally at this time of year it would be even higher.

BBC One easily won the day with 19%. BBC Two, C4 and C5 all improved week-on-week to 5.3%, 4.8% and 4.5% respectively.
