What a flop Tuesday Champions League football is on Itv, only 1.6million for the Celtic match .

CBB received 1.94m (11.2%) excluding +1. The +1 did not go over 100k, but usually +1 for 11pm gets 70-80k, so around 2.01-2.02m for last night. Great for the first 10pm slot of the series. One of the highest shares I have seen for BB in general this year.

Tonight the eviction at 9pm should get 2.2m+

Thought the royal doc would rate >3m. It was fascinating.

Big numbers for BBC1/2, 10m combined, helped no doubt by....

That's a dreadful rating, but it would have got that had it been on a Wednesday too. You can't say it means that Tuesday night football is a flop.

Can't help thinking there's a bit of negativity around football in general as a whole after the positivity of the Olympics. Wonder if the tide is finally turning...

Looks like Red or Black will be the sacrificial lamb there.

Sorry but the ratings part was blank when I posted. Also, no need for your curt response! I take it your life is full of perfection?

I wonder if BBC1 will come sniffing around for Great British Bake Off. His treatment of Celebrity Masterchef last year suggests that Danny Cohen is not overly fond of food programmes, but I would think Bake Off is more worthy of a primetime BBC1 slot than, say, The Flowerpot Gang.

Am I right in saying that's a rise week on week?

I really don't think they should put Great British Bake Off on BBC1. BBC2 has to have a few decent shows of it's own, and they won't schedule it right on BBC1 and will just piss the loyal viewers off.

So far they have not tampered with the winning format, fingers crossed this continues. Such a warm lovely show, compared to most RTV contests.

Celebrity Masterchef is being treated much better on BBC2 this time around.

If they were going to move it they would have done it this series, I really don't think it should or will be moved, it has BBC2 written all over it. You wouldn't get segments on the history of baking on a BBC1 show, another reason I'm against the move.

Outstanding rating for GBBO and it's only the second week, could it reach 5m this series, in overnights, I know last year's final did in officials.

I did explain this in the post you quoted but I suppose I can go over it again.

Firstly though I didn't suggest that Doctor Who was in a ratings crisis. In fact I pointed out that its final numbers and total reach figures remain very impressive despite the drop in its over nights performance. However the fact that Doctor Who isn't actually in a ratings crisis doesn't and won't stop the tabloids or the rest of the media from proclaiming that it is. We saw that with last years run and we've seen that pattern repeat with countless shows. EastEnders has been in a ratings crisis for about 3 years the way an alarming number of people describe it for example.

The reason I brought that up in relation to Red or Black though is because we all know that if Doctor Who's overnights are struggling again that's going to be the story. Its more 'interesting' and has much wider appeal than writing that once again Red or Black went largely unwatched. So Doctor Who failing to live up to expectations (which have now seemingly gone up because of Red or Black) will publicly cover for the fact that Red or Black is barely limping over the line. I'd also point out that I think with a couple of exceptions Doctor Who beat its competition last year but still no one cared about that. And I'd point out that The X Factor almost always beats its competition (and did this weekend with ease) but again no one cared about that either. The idea that success or failure is defined by the competition is wrong.

Your Tuesday analogy is flawed on a couple of fronts. Firstly with the exception of EastEnders when did anything the BBC scheduled on Tuesday nights fit the description 'one of the most popular shows on British TV'? Its not like for like at all. And I'd point out that the success of one of the most popular shows on British television has to be defined by more than beating Red or Black. Television is a game of expectations more than anything else. What do you suppose the reaction would be here if ITV's Tuesday night line-up was comfortably about 3 million? Or 3.5 million? It would be viewed as a positive. And the game of expectation brings me onto another point;

Everyone is expecting Doctor Who to crush Red or Black and everyone is expecting Red or Black to sink without trace. Does anyone seriously believe the show is going to grow? Lets say Doctor Who's overnights come in at around 5 million and Red or Black sticks at the 3-4 million range (or grows). What show comes out of that having won the expectations game? As I said the fact that Doctor Who is now up against a complete bomb (not to mention will have the time slot fans have been saying it needs for years) the pressure will be on it to be big in the over nights. Not big in the final numbers. Not big in the total reach figures. Big in the over nights because otherwise the story becomes 'Doctor Who ratings crisis' where Red or Black maybe gets a passing mention in a sentence along the lines of 'only just beating ITV's Red or Black'.


Great figure for Bake Off. This show has been one of the most surprising success stories of the past couple of years. Who in their right mind would have predicted a BBC2 baking competition would be pulling in more than 4 million viewers?

Wow at Bad Education rising, deserved imo. BBC Three have a hit on there hands there. Around 1.4m overall for it last night.

Amazing for Bake-Off. Even more amazing for The Queen's Mother in Law and another strong rating for CBB.

Accused down a bit, hopefully doesn't fall further, but a good rating all the same.

ITV...oh dear...I heard a LOT of moaning on twitter about the coverage of the game. Supposedly the visual quality was the 1970s and commentators (least on STV) were poor.

I think that rating will be headache inducing for ITV1. Dreadful. Most be the lowest rating in some of those timeslots they've ever had? Surely. Oucha.


So yeah - big win for the non-BBC One and non-ITV1 channels it seems.

Possibly the press stories will compare Dr Who's ratings with X Factor's. "Doctor Who x million viewers behind X Factor". Certainly a way for ITV to take attention away from X Factor's ratings if it continues to rate lower year-on-year.

I'll be interested to see how the two programmes rate across the 10 minutes that they overlap.

There is no reason at all why Dallas can't appeal to CBB viewers, indeed out of all their imports it is probably the easiest one to sell to the CBB audience. Channel 4 previously used CBB in precisely the same way with imports to great success. It is their most watched show and will ensure the whole evening is as strong as can be.

I don't see how it will put non CBB viewers off watching either. It starts in line with everything else on the key 9pm junction. Very easy to fit it around a normal night's viewing.

I think they've scheduled Dallas very well. It'll have a strong lead-in (2m?) and it has already had quite a bit of promotion so I'm sure everyone will know about it and when it's on by the time it airs. If The Mentalist could premiere to an overnight of 3.6m just a few years ago you'd think something as heavily promoted and as well known as Dallas could match that.

The only question is whether rival drama Mrs Biggs will be much of a draw. Personally I think Mrs Biggs will do OK but not spectacularly well and it'll probably appeal to a different audience to Dallas anyway. With so much new drama on BBC1 and ITV1 it was bound to face something but at least it isn't going to be against Downton Abbey or New Tricks. There should be room for both dramas to perform well (Mrs Biggs was never going to be huge anyway) on Wednesdays.
