Looks pretty healthy from the social networking side of things. How does that compare to the Olympic Opening/Closing, roughly, anyone know?
Must say I feel Britain Then and Now could be very vulnerable tonight. Just cannot see for the life of me where its viewers are going to come from. WDYTYA is tough factual opposition; the Paralympics will dominate the commercial side and both CBB and Vexed have loyal viewers.
Given how poorly ITV1 has been rating in less competitive slots than this of late, I'll predict ~1.5m for that.

They can have all the tweets they like. If the likes of Hollyoaks can get trending with 870k viewers, to me it means jack IMO
Not entirely sure what to make of the Channel 4's Paralympics coverage so far. Mostly good I think.
The video packages (like the promotion) have been brilliant and I think they've got a strong team presenting the coverage. And I think the focus on the stories of the athletes is obviously a strong route to take for the Paralympics because they're inspiring and dramatic stories. Although I will say the way they introduced their 'disabled correspondents' was terrible. It made it sound as if they were filling quotas although the concept of disabled presenters helping to front the Paralympics is good.
I will say however that they've been let down by a rather non-existent Opening Ceremony.

Around 800 or 900, but I'm not sure whether Zeebox registers Tweets/min over 1,000, I've never seen Zeebox break 1,000, so whether 800 is really x,800, I don't know.

Yeah, WWE gets numerous worldwide trends every week, their main show did 4.48 million viewers on American tv this week. It's just that the 4.48M are likely to use social media/the internet and WWE push it hard.

It does feel wrong. But I suspect some at the Beeb would have thought whether it was really worth the cost and effort for the small audiences involved.

What I saw of the ceremony between the ad breaks was rather meh after the wonder of the Olympics. Not C4's fault that of.course.

I don't think the decision to have the athletes parade earlier in the ceremony (the main showpiece part is to follow - we've only seen one act of six) will help ratings.
And Jon Snow has just rather depressed me with his war based commentary in the last part - Krishnan isn't brilliant but he's better than that. A bid ad heavy at the moment but standard practice for commercial broadcasters to pack the ads in during the athletes parade.

I imagine most people will think the format is similar to the Olympics - ie that most of the "show" is before the athletes come out. So people won't realise it's worth waiting for what will come afterwards.

I remember in years past the season proper didn't really get going until mid-September, for all broadcasters, so we're lucky really.

So it sounds like the Beeb were allowed to bid, but were outbid. Those are astonishingly small amounts of money for rights though, just £60k an hour. You have to add in production costs, but still.

Ideally it would have been on BBC One from 9am to 6pm with a break for the news and BBC Two from 6pm to 10:30pm in my opinion.

Something I remember reading at the time C4 won the rights - can't find the specific article but the BBC planning 50 hours of coverage (compared to 150 for C4) on BBC1/2 rings a bell, and this article speculates C4 planned to show significantly more than the BBC did.
Of course I wouldn't have been surprised if closer to the event the BBC had added more hours, especially after the Olympics, but I do think apart from the ceremonies and weekend afternoons much of it would have been on BBC2 rather than BBC1.
I suspect though like the Olympics once Britain starts winning medals the TV coverage will automatically seem better - there were loads of questions about the BBC's Olympic coverage in the first few days, but as Team GB picked up medals the complaints disappeared to practically nothing.

Well the Beijing Olympic Opening itself got about 5 million, so if we assume it will get about 2/5th's it could get around 9/10 million tonight, but I don't think that'll happen based on it being 3 positions lower on the EPG...
Although, I'm sure C4 would like to think tonight would just be 3 million lower...

Doubtful that they would have given it that much coverage on the main two channels, I think some people are getting completely carried away with the ratings potential. It's massively niche stuff and most people simply don't care about the Paralympics.
I reckon 5-8m is certainly achievable tonight, based on curiosity and it being London, but we're looking at low numbers hereafter - doubt anything will peak at 3m or more.
George A just gave Channel 4 a plug on the Ten News - "coverage continues now on Five Live or you can watch on Channel 4"!
