I've wondered this. According to BARB there are 27.1 private household TVs in the UK. Is the 30 million people are mentioning inclusive of businesses, pubs etc?

On a Sunday especially during the XF final, since 15m were watching XF and that was only 49% of the audience.
ROB's jackpot next week is £1.5 million, the highest ever cash prize on UK television. Could be an interesting show (I wish the result of that wouldn't have come up instantly when you search ROB in google

Those are very good questions. We'll know for certain when Strictly starts proper in October. The launch show in September has never done the ratings the proper series opener does.

I think 6.4 mllion is respectively solid for Dr Who. Matt Smith is a fabulously quirky Doctor but he is not as box office as Tennant was and, however much they spend on making it look good, the show just does not have quite the buzz surrounding it as it did.
Personally I thought last nights episode was an absolute cracker.

Yes, that in itself is cause for concern, with XF and Ant and Dec ITV's expensive primetime juggernauts, especially as two primetime staples of BBC1's line up are as old as the hills in a tv sense.
All lacklustre stuff ratingswise though, and MOTD besting the two recent primetime live games also shows how difficult it is to make viewers tune in.

The more I think about won't the Beeb be kind of peeved about DW's ratings? I mean they had a solid spring hit that did great numbers for that time of year and was desparately needed and where they have had nothing obvious to replace it. They have gone to the cost and inconvenience of moving it to the autumn presumably at Moffat's promise of bigger overnights and on the evidence of last year and the start of this year it is doing no better just now it is getting good rather than great ratings for the time of year.

Just for clarity, the 27.1m is the number of TV households (the number of sets will be far higher), and the 30m who watched, say, Eastenders over Christmas 1986, is the number of people. (Although that was split across two showings, as has been said). And as KennyT points out, it's home viewing only.

Yes, but the point I was making was to counter Andy23's suggestion that the Paralympics are a big factor in TXF's 6-point slump, when the three BBC1 shows I mentioned are all up 2-3 points on a year ago, and they also faced the Paralympics.

Firstly, the figures for ONE show this series are hardly indicative of the entire run. They could go up, they could go down, they could stay broadly the same.
Secondly, it's doing about the same as it was anyway, give or take.
Thirdly, where is this extra cost of moving to an Autumn showing? As for any inconvenience, maybe it's so for some fans, but for the BBC? For the writers and actors? For the production team as a whole? I recall reading one report that stated that the team were fed up with 10 or 14 hour shooting schedules in the coldest & wettest months of the year So they might be glad of a change.
And if it allows the BBC et al to move smoothly into the 50th year, then where's the problem?

Yes, as far as I know ITV1 HD is nowadays automatically bundled into all the ratings reports we see. (Apart from the BARB officials)
I see the usual excuses popping up for Doctor Who. Its remarkable to think that people in this thread were predicting a huge return yesterday that could push The X Factor. However you spin it and regardless of how many people watch online or timeshift that's a really disappointing return for Who. It should have done better than that. Arguably even a lot better than that. So whilst I'm sure everyone will spend most of the next couple of days hammering The X Factor I don't think Who should just be given a free ride here.
The X Factor had another really bad night. The problem is that at this stage there's really nothing ITV or SyCo can do about it. There's only so much re-editing of the audition shows that can be done and I'm not convinced that it'll help much at this point anyway. The plan may just have to be to hold their noses and get through the auditions and really push boot camp and judges houses this year. If however they can't stir up any interest there then its going to be a long few months for ITV...
Also can we just take a moment to appreciate how staggeringly terrible both the BBC1 and ITV1 schedules were last night. Doctor Who had a lead-in that didn't crack 3 million and a lead-out that only just managed to break 3 million. And The X Factor is the only show on ITV that was higher than 3.5 million. Is it really any wonder that both of these shows are performing relatively poorly when they're surrounded by such terrible content that no one's watching?

Indeed which is why I mentioned last year as well. perhaps it will make a massive jump in the next couple of weeks in which case I will most certainly acknowledge it was stroke of brilliance.
Yes which to me isn't great, it's good but at this time of year it feels like if should be doing better?
I don't claim to know much about the inner works of TV but to me it does seems like production has been more stop/start than the machine it was before. Also what has replaced it in the spring? Plus Merlin has to be factored in. All that just one or two anniversary eps?
well Moffat's talk of s suggested that it at least had something to do with it.

It turns out that TXF is down not 6, but 8.4 share points from last year, exc +1. I know the auditions went unusually well last year with the live shows disappointing, but still that's a huge fall.
