Transferring number
Why can't you transfer your mobile number if you get a new contract with say for example Carphone Warehouse using the same network you were on before e.g. orange if you were on a contract with orange before this new one?

One of life's little mysteries that bigger brains than ours have failed to solve
![]() One option that I know works with Orange because I did it myself is to change tariff rather than a new contract. I was on a very old tariff for years and years but decided I needed more data allowance as I was now in smartphone territory. So I just upgraded my old tariff to one of the current "animal" tariffs they do. No number change involved. And it was almost the same as a new contract. So if all you want to do is change what tariff and deal you are on why not investigate that option? I did it pretty much entirely online, don't remember having to do battle with Orange CS at all

Not sure I underhand the question. I have always kept the same number despite renewing at different stores.

I basically was on a rolling contract with orange for a few years and bought the phone outright, now that phone is broken so I need a new phone and want a smartphone. Originally I wasn't looking at the Samsung Galaxy s3 because when I went into orange it was way out my price range. On dialaphone there is a very good deal for it at £26 a month (no cashback scam involved) with 600 mins, unlim texts and 250mb of data which would be great. I was wary of going for this because if there are any issues with the phone as well as contract discrepencies then it is upto dialaphone to sort.
Though now I have just found out that I won't be able to keep my number if I go for this deal online and you would think if you were already on that network it would be the easiest option. Edit- The deal on dialaphone is also on orange network (I think this is where the problem lies?) I went into orange store yesterday and they offered me the Sony Xperia S for £26 a month too, free phone, but with 200 mins, 500 texts and 1gb of data, I don't know if this is a good deal? I feel like if I want to keep my number I'm trapped with buying from orange themselves unless you move network |

Probably a marketing thing.
But there are ways around it that someone on here can probably explain better than I. Basically my daughter had the same problem on het T-mobile account. She got an upgrade deal from the internet via a T-Mobile dealer that meant she had to get a new number. What she did was to buy a 99p sim from a different supplier, and port her old new number to the sim, which took 7 days. She then ported that number to her new phone and voila, she had her original number on her new deal. She did say the operators were very grumpy about doing it, but they had no choice. Not very clear, but if you're interested I can contact her and get the exact sequence for you. But it is definitely doable, they just don't let you know about it. |

When I posted that the only way to port a number within the same network was to port out to another network & then port back in again several people over on this thread claimed that I was wrong. I am glad to see confirmation that I was right all along http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...965&highlight=

To upgrage thrrough orange...
Ok dialaphone may not do it because they're owned by Phones4U and therefore more than a little dodgy but in your original post you singled-out CPW, who AFAIK offer the exact same deals to upgrading customers as new customers. |

I think the point was more why not upgrade through a third-party?

Because I'm currently on a rolling sim only contract so it doesn't work the same.
People can and do upgrade from SIM-only contracts to contracts with handsets all the time - both directly with their networks and via third parties. Quote:
This previous contract was also not taken out in my name as at the time I was under 18
That's completely separate to the type of contract you have. |

This bit's not true.

I know you can still upgrade but was told because it's a month rolling sim that they couldn't offer me the same deal through upgrading because on a monthly rolling sim you can cancel at any time, you're not really contracted in so the offer wouldnt be the same as if it was a new contract.
If you upgraded from a SIM-only contract to, say, a 24-month contract with a handset you would then be tied in for a minimum of 24 months, you wouldn't be on a rolling contract any more and therefore wouldn't be able to just cancel at any point. Sounds like a lot of obfuscation to try and justify ripping you off. As I said before, companies like CPW offer exactly the same deals for new and upgrading customers. |

Sounds like a lot of obfuscation to try and justify ripping you off. As I said before, companies like CPW offer exactly the same deals for new and upgrading customers. Aside from the fact that my contract at the minute isn't in my name I was explaining that I wouldn't updgrade because although I am entitled to upgrade it wouldn't get me the same offer as I can currently get with the handset I want on a new contract. The reason for this is because my contract at the minute is 30 day rolling sim only, which is classed as a contract but I'm not really tied down if I can cancel at any time and so I'm not entitled to a great offer through upgrading. I am entitled to some offers, which are better than new customers would get but not on the phone I am looking at. Through this new contract it is 24 months and so yes like you say cannot cancel at any time. I think you thought I was referring to cancelling at any time on a new 24 month contract but I didn't mean that, I was using that to show that currently I can do that which means I don't have as much loyalty to the network as people who are tied down for longer. |

I've researched this and now understand how it works, thanks. I only wonder how long it can take to do this? If i porrt my number from orange onto a temporary sim on T Mobile (how long will this take). Is there then any rules saying you have to stay with T Mobile for x amount of time before you leave, so they can get around people doing this? then port number from the T Mobile sim back to Orange on the new sim (how long will this take on average?) I worry that it could take a month and meanwhile I am pying on a contract on the new phone with a number I wouldn;t be using
Let me say again, Orange (who she had the temp sim with) were not happy with what she was doing, and the fact that she was doing it so quickly. But they have no choice but to allow you to do this due to legal obligations. They had a really good go at dissuading her from it so be forewarned that you may have a bit of a wrangle over the phone. |
