I was thinking it's funny how things change. At one time the status symbol was to have as small a mobile phone as possible, they got so small it was bordering on ridiculous.

Now it's the reverse though screen sizes have surely reached their limit as it still has to be mobile and fit in your pocket.

I'm used to a 4" screen now, I don't think I would want to go to anything smaller now but likewise would I like to have any of the bigger screened models out now, just seems overkill no matter how thin they can make the phone.

It's amazing how far things have come though in a decade, the power you can carry around in your pocket well I doubt 15 years ago anyone would of believed you so makes you wonder where things will be in another 10/15 years. Though the one negative is short battery times, battery design has not been able to keep up, hopefully they don't get even shorter than they are now lol

Gordon Moore, founder of Intel predicted that this would be the case with the so called Moore's Law.

Screen size is getting crazy IMO, I have seem people with Galaxy Notes and it's just silly, boardering on a tablet.

I think round about the 4 inch mark (Galaxy S2?) seems to be about the perfect size for a device that easily fits in your pocket

Good job you have sorted that out for everyone then

So perfect size is 4' now is it and not 3.5.. better pray the iphone 5 doesn't go any bigger then.

When I was younger I always wanted one of those miniture tv's. About 4 inch screen, black and white, really fuzzy picture.

At lunchtime today I watched an episode of a tv programme on my phone using SkyGo in colour with very good quality picture. Sometimes I am blown away with the technology we have available in our pocket.

My phone has a 4.3 inch screen. Used a mates 3.5 inch screen phone recently and it felt tiny.

I'm sure I remember something about Steve Jobs saying that the 3.5 inch screen was the idea size for the average person to be able to reach all of the screen with their thumb whilst holding the phone.

He didn't think a bigger phone screen was needed, but if you've got big hands like me I find the 3.5 inch screen a little too small, especially for viewing websites. The 4 inch screen is just right and it also makes the phone more usable for satnav at that screen size as well.

Back about 1997 I said to my pal who had just bought a Motorola 8900 (bigish GSM phone with a huge screen) That in the future all phones would have big screens.

I was right and to this day he still comments on I predicted the trend

Yes Saint Steve was convinced that 3.5" was the ideal size and that it was an act of heresy to make it bigger. Im sure he will be turning in his grave when the New iPhone ™ is released this autumn as its rumoured to have a larger screen

What is this based on then what have you and Gormond used with a 4' screen to come to this conclusion?

SG3 and One X are too big for me. I'm hoping someone brings out a high-end phone similar in size to my Desire S. At the moment I see no reason to upgrade to a phone that suits my usage less than my 18 month old phone.

I've looked at a few phones the same size as the Desire S (Desire C and Huawei G300), and they seem very similar specs to the Desire S, so not worth upgrading to.

I had one of those mini TV's about 20 years ago, seemed so amazing to be able to watch TV sat in the park lol, the screen was small though and hard to view must of been 2" screen, the device itself was way bulkier.

When did I ever say 3.5 was perfect? Oh yeah that's right I didn't

Infact when the 4S came out I said i wasnt buying one as I thought the screen was to small to warrant an upgrade.

However I think you can go the opposite way, if the iPhone 5 turns out to be 4.7 inches I won't be buying it as its not for me.

A friend of mine has an HTC One S and that's as big as I would be willing to go (which is why he didn't go for the One X or S3).

So why do you think 4" is perfect based upon what exactly?

Having held an HTC One X (134mm x 70mm) and a Samsung Galaxy S3 (137mm x 71mm) the phones are to physically to large for my preference.

Somewhere around 125mm x 65mm would be my limit.

As you say but based on what exactly? what is the image like on that size screen, how big is the bezel, that would be 16:9 then not 4:3? which phones have you used for that deduction?

Why do you need someone to go into so much detail as to what they prefer and find perfect for themselves?

If they like it then they like it - no need to make a science project out of it all

Simple I am interested to know why someone with an iphone and very fond of it, has decided that a 4" is the perfect size now.

I personally don't know many phones that have this size screen for this conclusion to be based upon, unless it is not based on anything physical at least as of right now

And I am sure Mr G won't bother answering if he is bothered or bored by it unlike you

Did he ever actually say that?

The screen size is unimportant, it's the physical size of the device in my hand and with the dimensions I gave that would be around 4 inches, give or take. For example the Galaxy S2 would be my limit size wise in order for it to be completely usable with one hand, and evidently 16:9 has advantages as it's becoming a standard.

The rumours all suggest a 5.5" screen but a chassis that's about the same as the existing Note.

Yes he was reluctant to have a range of different screen sizes because it could make apps and web pages render badly.

Having compared the SG3 to my iphone in the shops, the actual unit is only a couple of mm bigger. The screen is just all the border thats around the iphone screen thats gone.

a 4" screen does seem to be the holy grail at the moment. Rumoured S3 mini and S2 Plus...Suggested here.....
I must confess that dropping down to a 4" would be nice, personally. I don't use my phone for viewing films and TV, so going back to a more manageable size in the hand, could be an improvement, especially for nights out...As long as it doesn't have to be an iPhone....
