Since Everything Everywhere has got permission to use 4G LTE on 1800Mhz and looks like it will be operation this year. Lets see what phones will work on this band.

There are 2 versions of the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 that will work on this band but you will have trouble finding them over here!

Galaxy S2 HD LTE - basically the same as the i9210 but with a 720p screen.

LG Optimus True HD LTE P936 (aka LG Maximo True HD LTE) - basically the same specs as the Samsung above, also never let it be said LG don't know how to name a phone

HTC One XL - the version of the One X that swaps the Tegra3 chip for a dual-core S4.

The HTC is by some margin the best of the three handsets and also the most interesting IMO, as the fact that the Krait SoCs support the 1800MHz LTE band means that there's a reasonable possibility of us seeing a number of LTE-capable handsets on sale in the UK by the end of the year.

So there is currently no quad core 4G phones?

Samsung have an LTE variant of the Galaxy S3 that uses the quad-core Exynos SoC (no idea if it would be compatible with EE's frequency or not), as well as the more common LTE versions sold in the US that use the dual-core Krait SoCs. Other than that, I think that almost all LTE-capable handsets are dual-core.
The number of cores the chip has is really a pretty meaningless way of comparing handsets though as the dual-core Krait chips (such as the one in the One XL) are basically the equal of any quad-core processors used in handsets on the market just now.

One handset that will be interesting once it reaches market though will be the LG Optimus G, which will feature a quad-core Krait SoC (so, basically twice as powerful as anything on the market just now) and it will have LTE as well, though the frequencies have yet to be confirmed.

I'll put my money on the SGS3 quad core LTE version launching in Korea being 100% compatible with all UK LTE bands. Most korean LTE phone are so i don't see why this one would be any different if they plan on launching them europe as well.

LG Optimus True HD is basically the galaxy S2 (slightly better) with a 4G LTE chip in it. Can be imported for around £250 which is amazing considering the standard Galaxy S2 (no LTE) is around £330 and the LTE version from Korea is still around £400.

If only we had LTE now. I'd buy that phone in a flash^

I'd also like to see how the LG Optimus G stacks up once it's released. And i'd like to see Samsung launch their Galaxy Note with 4G LTE for europe and Asia (which they will in due time)

It'll be pointless seeing as it doesn't use 1800Mhz, Don't think it'll launch here until next year. At which time there will be other phones out.

Not always true. LG released an international version of their phone which only went to Germany and Spain because it would only work on their 4G networks.

I wouldn't say most Korean LTE handsets are compatible.
There's only 5 compatible handsets listed in this thread, not all of which were for the Korean market - that can't represent the majority of LTE-capable handsets released in Korea, can it?


On a personal note, the Galaxy S3 doesn't interest me.
If I were going to purchase a handset now I'd only consider ones using Krait or A15-derived SoCs.

South Korea use 800Mhz /1800Mhz so it's unlikely they would release a phone that is not compatible with those bands. They would work in the Uk (network dependant)

tbh i can wait for LTE. I'd like to see it in a number of places first with cheap handset availability before i buy one.

I'm sure Orange / T-mobile will bring a dongle to the market for mobile broadband.

Huawei E398 dongle and Huawei E589 Mi-Fi will probably be launched later this year, with Three set to follow in the new year. (at a guess)

I really can't see the need for LTE on a phone, dongles yes but on a phone I just don't see why it's required. 3G is perfectly adequate.

The problem with 3G is that the coverage is patchy which won't be the case with 4G as all masts are to be upgraded.

According to Wikipedia, it's 850MHz and 1800MHz they use and not all networks use both frequencies.
So there quite probably will be some LTE handsets released in South Korea that only support the 850MHz band, which might not work over here.

Not to mention some of the Korean networks appear to use CDMA, which means the handsets would be completely incompatible.
