in an attempt to gain customers, T mobile have anounced a new data plan which when combined with their standard plans will only cost £57 per month ( based on current $/£ conversion - US price = $89.99 ), that is for customers of T mobile USA on their HSPA+ system, knowns as 3G in the UK ( or sometimes 3.5G )

and there was me thinkingUK ( and to a larger extent European ) prices were high.

I can't even begin to imagine why you thought that was the case.

The US has a terribly uncompetitive mobile market.

The US has always been more expensive for mobiles.

It's not all cheap prices in the US!

Data prices in the states are horrendous, I remember looking at buying a local sim when I was there last year but it was silly money for just 500mb.

Dont just currency convert! Cell contracts in the states are horrendous compared to the UK because there is so little competition. Thats one thing at least that is very good in the UK atm for a change. Its the same with home internet connections aswell.

Its also because there is so much contention on the internet in the states unless you live in a city.

The other problem in the US is that in some areas only 1 provider has signal, so some people don't have any choice who they can sign up with!
