Jack and Vera tonight (3-12-04)
BCJ
03-12-2004
After seeing tonight's episode, the highlight for me was the trick Vera played on Jack. Their scenes reminded me how Corrie was about 10-12 years ago - real humour. I just wish their was more of this in Corrie lately. We really need to see more of Jack and Vera doing scenes like that. I really hope they don't leave next year.

What I really mean is more J and V - they are so underused and their scenes are hilarious.

Yes it's been hilarious from Day 1, comedy hasn't faltered!

I think before Kieran Roberts, the comedy was questionable - in the couple of years after Brian Park. It has improved greatly though but there isn't as much as what there was.

I would, it's always been a light soap.

I agree, he and Jane McNaught tried to be like EastEnders, gritty drama. Fell flat on their arses though

Nah, Coronation Street was truly gritty when it first started

I'm double Ben's age, that's one we all know.

Ben is still a Corrie 'genius' but I've seen early episodes of Corrie and the humour is still there.

It's not about who is old enough, I'm certainly not old enough it's about what I know and what the storylines back then involved and how they were received by the viewer.

Early storylines in Coronation Street were very close to home for many of the viewers, covering things like unemployment, crime, sex and violence. These storylines were very innovative for their time and context.

When Coronation Street first started it was as shocking and controversial as Brookside was when it first started.

I'm not saying that the comedy element wasn't there at times, but it was nowhere near as slapstick as it is today or was even in the 70s.

Ben these storylines were in place but if you were to watch episodes back you'd find the comedy is definetely in there, even if it is different comedy to the sort we see now.

Yeah i agree that Jack and Vera are so underused but i do still think there is plenty of humour in the soap, that to me is one of its best features, the humour is always there!
