Metal festivals are huge in Europe, just don't go to one expected to come out without being bruised and battered

The beauty of metal is - it's always there.
It might not be in the charts or the headlines, but there's been a thriving 'scene' for 35 years or more.

I'm a huge Rammstein fan and am always amazed that they can sell out arenas like the O2, MEN and NEC, but when you mention their name people still say Rammwho??????????

I don't think it's an age thing really.

That's not my bag either, but metal's a broad church and there's some gutwrenchingly powerful but beautifully melodic heavy music around too, particularly from the Scandinavian countries.

Scandinavia is producing some great Metal of which these are two of my faves at the moment:

Kamelot

Evergrey

And don't forget that there are so many sub genres of Metal of which this site explains them all with examples(click the skulls)

Anyone for Pirate Metal?

You can't consider yourself to be a rock fan unless you at least like what get's towards hard rock / metal crossover territory to my mind.'So called' Indie rock fans who dismiss metal are idiots as far as I'm concerned.Metal is an essential part of rock's developement. You don't have to appreciate every genre or band within the Metal classification of course to be considered a true rock fan - there's a little bit of everything within metal for most rock fans.Still amazes me how easily it is dismissed, despite how far it's reach & popularity has got - from the age of 6 - 66

I was in this at Sonisphere in 2009. It hurt, but it's part of Lamb of God .. when you see them, that's what you expect to happen.

Indie fans tend to be bigoted about any kind of music except some angsty, pasty faced whingers playing some three chord dirge about how awful life is in a new town. Metal is far bigger, Deep Purple once played a gig to an audience the size of Sheffield and bands like Purple, Led Zep, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden enjoy massive followings.

Id recomemend any metalheads to give Brown Brigade a go, the lead singer and guitarist was the indian guy who quit Sum 41 to duck out the mainstream and play his favourite music, this is one of their best songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IM6yNHvHCM

Planet Rock has a million listeners a week, which suggests the market for metal, prog rock and AOR is still huge. Yes the music went through a terrible period in the nineties when Britpop came close to killing it off, but since 2000 metal and modern variants thereof has been thriving.

Love pirate/folk/battle metal.
Particular favourites being Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Turisas and Enisferum (who I'm seeing in Camden next month).

don't tarnish everyone who listens to indie music with the same brush. I happen to like some of that as well as hard rock and metal. I also listen to loads of other genres of music.

Rammstein are amazing live.
Travelled up to Manchester last Feb to see them for the 10th time and was sat outside a bar on the afternoon before the gig and who should come up and sit on a table a few feet away but Christoph, Paul and Ollie!

They were really charming and happy to indulge an old lady with a few pics.
