Lots of people criticise 80's music but there were some fantastic songs. I think you're after pop tunes so have a look at the track listings of these compilations and pick out your favourites:

1. Simply The Best Eighties

2. Capital Gold Eighties Legends

If you want more indie/alternative songs, have a look at these compilations:

3. Dark Side of the 80's

4. Alternative 80's

I might start making my own 80's compilation

As a teenager growing up in the 80s I really hated the popular music of that decade (not the rock and metal of course) but compared to the 90s/00s pop/chart music, when I hear a classic 80s song I listen and think damn, this is so much better than most of the crap that gets put out today.

Yeah, I agree . I'm into indie/alternative/rock rather than pop but some of those 80's pop tunes are brilliant, especially compared to the pop songs nowadays .

You beat me to it! I have that first album (The Broadcast) and they did release another couple of singles ('Any Colour' and 'One For The Mockingbird') from it if I remember correctly, the latter reached No. 52! The other didn't chart

That first album is excellent. Highly recommended if you can get hold of a copy.

You're right. And yet this is exactly the same thing my parents said of 60s music in the 80s! Scary thought !

A sound and varied selection if I may say so.

'Clouds Across The Moon' by The Rah Band - damn, damn and double damn. Now you've mentioned it in your playlist, I'm going to have dig the single out now, blow the dust off the grooves and give it a spin!

A couple of 'alternative' (I hate that phrase, but couldn't think of any others...) ideas:

McCarthy - Charles Windsor
Smiths - Girlfriend in a Coma
Pixies - Here comes your Man (I think Dolittle was 80's, sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong)
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Clash - Rock the Casbah
Anything by Prince - he was that good in the 80's
That song by Big Audio Dynamite i can't remember the name of
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights*
Adam and the Ants - Prince Charming*

See, and who said the eighties were all bad? Just because the hair styles and polyester trousers were bad, some of the music was good!

*ok, not that alternative, but fantastic songs, showing that quality pop can exist, and it doesn't have to be factory manufactured trash!
