R.I.P. Aaliyah - 11 years since death (16/01/79-25/08/01)
R.I.P Aaliyah Dana Haughton, undoubtedly my favorite singer and an icon to many current R&B singers.
Can't believe it's been 11 years since the tragic plane crash that took the lives of her and nine others. RIP! |

This might be a bit controversial, but I think she was a bit overrated. A lot of people on here have said before during discussions that she would be absolutely huge if she was around today, but I just can't see it. A few of her songs were good and she was very talented, but she wasn't as amazing as people make out. I think her sad death and the awful way she died sometimes clouds peoples judgement.

R.I.P. Aaliyah. Her music still lives on. Such a sad loss for the industry, she was evolving into a real triple threat
![]() I hope that posthumous album materializes the right way. I want Timbaland, Missy, J Dub and all the producers that she worked with to be a part of it and give us a banger! As far as her career goes, nobody can assume where she'd be today. She passed away just weeks after her third album was released, we don't know how much she would progress. Maybe she'd do some more acting, maybe she'd experiment with new sounds and really set trends...Noone knows. The music she gave us while she was alive is amazing and timeless though. |

Her third album remains to be my favorite album of all time.

IKR! So many different sounds and vibes. It's one of those albums that you can play from start to finish without ever getting bored.

no way. i am usually one who agrees with the last part. i think freddie mercury is completely overrated, but aaliyah was something special. she was the innovator. you look at beyonce now and see she's huge, but aaliyah was the first of that time to do everything beyonce has done. she was in relationships with high profile and all around loved guys. most notably r. kelly. before beyonce even thought about getting into acting, aaliyah was the one to do it. all her music was ahead of it's time, especially her work with timbaland and missy because they have always been known for that. she had the voice of an angel. and she didn't write any of her own music like beyonce. and she started when she was very young. her first album came out four years before destiny's child had one. if she were alive, she would the beyonce of today and beyonce would be like brandy or monica.

I always had the feeling with Aaliyah that she would take her time and get things right... i think if she was alive today she would still be a very credible artist and actress... whether that means as big as beyonce and others, i dont know... i personally think she had the talent and 'xfactor' (sorry, just cant think of another word to describe it) to still be a huge success today... RIP x

...although this probably shouldn't be in a death anniversary thread. |

The fact that was planning to collaborate with Trent Reznor just before she died is an indication that she was a little different from the norm. The singles with Timbaland, like 'Pick Yourself Up' had a very techno feel to the production, which wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Carl Craig album.
I get the feeling that she would have come up with some very original, possibly shockingly different songs had she lived. RIP Aaliyah. |
