Has anyone heard Super Audio CD and if so, how does it sound when compared to a normal CD?

Isn't it similar to HDCD?

HDCD is good for orchestral sounds as it has a wider eange of frequencies it can store. Not much different for standard rock though.

Havent heard it myself but “by all accounts” its as good if not better than DVD Audio.

DVD Audio blows away CD so I’d expect SACD to sound superb.

Unfortunately both hires formats are handicapped by a lack of decent software…

Heard a demo at Live 2000 and was quite impressed. Sony actually made an effort of playing back a standard CD and SACD recording of three different tracks on some very high end gear. The difference was very noticable even with all the background noise from the Live event.

You can't help but wonder at the manufacturers sometimes...

Having had a nice standardised CD format for since 1983, and now DVD is looking likely to be the replacement for it (and video), you do wonder why they try and promote a different format. I know whichever format wins will make tons of money but surelyif any format will succeed it would be a DVD compatible one like DVDA? (Or do the other formats offer backward compatability with DVD ?)

Whilst I can't say I know all the technicalities in's and out's of the various formats, it does seem very much like a re-run of DCC/ DAT / MD format wars. The manufacturers must lose tons of money making a format that has little chance of success.

I heard Mahler's Symphony No.5 on SACD and I was very impressed. It's a huge difference to CD.
But I wouldn't buy a SACD player as there are very few recordings available.
