To me this must be the most fantastic and musically exciting decade ever, even the much criticised middle period between punk and glam.
Take a look at a chart from 1970, you have the last Beatles hits, ska and reggae, the start of heavy rock with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, soul and middle of the road singers like Val Doonican. Move forward to 1973, heavy rock is massive( though mostly an album format by then), the glam rock scene is at its peak with Slade and the like, singer/songwriters like Lynsey de Paul and Gilbert O Sullivan are popular, teenyboppers have the Osmonds and there's the New Seekers for the older market. Then on to 1976, glam has died out, The Osmonds are MIA, there are the first rumblings of punk, disco is ruling the dancefloor and the charts, heavy rock is still doing big business but starting to feel old and novelty acts are popping up. Fast forward to 1979 and a very different vibe, punk has largely finished and disco is on its last legs, but in their place is a mod revival, ska is massive again, singer/songwriters like Kate Bush are very popular, a new generation of metal bands has appeared and there are minor trends to synthesisers, rock and roll and post punk.
Truly a roller coaster of a decade for music and one that was rapidly changing.

There was a huge diversity in the 1970's.

A lot of pooh but a hell of a lot of class. But that pooh is still better than the formulaic music we have to suffer nowadays

1965-1973 were my peak years for music, so a bit of the 60's and a bit of the 70's for me. (and no I wasn't alive back then.)

prefered the 60's, i liked the mid 60's mod, r n b , motown, early psyche and even pop (for me the monkees were far superior to any 70's pop acts).

1970 was a good year, but for me it went downhill rapidly, bottoming out in 76 before punk thankfully revived the style of music i prefered.

i didnt like glam, it was as good as piss taking, ridiculous outfits, daft songs with stupid meaningless lyrics. id suggest songs like 'waterloo sunset', 'ticket to ride', 'dont let me be misunderstood', 'shapes of things', were far superior both lyrically and musically to any of the glam classics.

as for the over indulgence and pompocity that was 'prog'.... let alone the vileness that was philly and sweet soul.... i could have happily skipped from 1970 to 1977 and not missed much at all.

sorry, for me the 1970's dispite its variety, was possibly my least favoured decade.
