no dial tone

Hi all
I have a twin handset BT Studio 1100 digital cordless phone, few years old but working perfectly
Until....a fox got in and chewed through the cable!
Coincidentally I had 2 spares in the house, the cable I'm talking about looks like this

One end in the base unit, the other into the phone line. Now? No dial tone. Everything set up correctly as before, and have tested the phone line with another phone - it's fine. Have tried re-registering the handset and base unit, all seems fine.
It's a puzzle - all that has changed is one cable has replaced another.
Any thoughts? Do I have to buy yet another cable? Do they differ in some way, despite looking identical?
Any clues much appreciated!

ive had this sort of problem before when I lost the cable to one of my phone base stations.

cables like that are not all the same, despite looking identical, and having the same connections on each end.

I just ended up trying various ones I had lying around the house, and eventually found one that worked!

they must be wired differently inside.

I have come across two ways to wire these BT plug to RJ11 leads. In one format the line pair is wired to the outer two of the four contacts on the RJ11 (ie pins 1 and 4) and in others to the inner pair (2 and 3).

And sometimes it is not obvious how they are wired as you cannot always see which wire goes where at the BT plug end. So fairly obviously the lead you have is wired incorrectly for your phones. If you have a multi meter to hand with an Ohms scale you could work out which pair the line is wired to at the RJ11. Just put one probe on pin 2 or 5 of the BT plug and see which pin it goes to on the RJ11 (NB on some BT plugs only four pins exist so 2 and 5 are actually the outer pair of the four). Once you've done that find a lead that is wired the opposite way, if you can!

Thanks folks - seems it must be the wrong type despite being identical to the naked eye. Have bought this, and will cross my fingers!

Guess what - no dial tone.
No idea what to do next - did I buy the wrong one? I now have 3 that look the same none of which work. Phone line still working fine.
Sorry to be a bore but - any further thoughts?

That cable looks like it is wired with the line pair on pins 1 and 4 of the RJ11. Take a close look at the RJ11 (the smaller of the two connectors) and if I am correct (not that obvious on the picture on the Amazon website) then the only two connections should be the outer pair, ie the ones nearest the edges of the plug. With an obvious gap between the two.

If that is the case then try this lead

This is wired with the line pair on the inner two terminals of the RJ11.

If that doesn't work then you're on your own

But I have only ever seen those two ways of wiring a BT to RJ11 lead. So one of them ought to work. Always assuming the phones still work of course!

Yes, I can help

The Wire you bought must of been wired wrong inside the plugs, they can be wired in two different ways, so I am told,
you must of bought one of these, I cannot help you further as I do not know how they wire inside the plugs, as I do not wire them up myself, I do not make them,
I know a few people who makes them for networks, telephones and things, but they did not tell me how they work

One possible suggestion is if you have Sky TV with an existing warranty or a Sky Protect insurance is too swap the lead that does not work
with the one at the back of the Sky box and phone Sky up and say that the phone connection has stopped working and they will send someone round
and they will give you a replacement cable and see if that works with your telephone or buy one from a Telephone Supply shop that you know that works
