Are there suggested minimum specs for Android 4?

Still narrowing down my options fora Smartphone and during my research I note that the likes of Sony are upgrading phones to this OS, but have a word of warning on their website that some phones may not have sufficient hardware capabilities to cope. However they don't say what the minimum spec threshold is. Even Android make no comment on this. Whilst I appreciate that the higher the spec is the more that the phone will be future proof I do find it odd that there is nothing official out there.

Has anyone upgraded to Android 4 and wished they hadn't because their phone was not up to it?

Yes I have seen this but it is not exactly an official source.

I'm not sure it has official specs as such since people have managed to port 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on to years old handsets like the xperia mini pro which is terribly spec'd.

Best place for this question would be the XDA forums

At least 512mb ram imo, and at least a 800Mhz processor from this/last year. Thats for it to run 'smooth'

Which phone are you looking at OP?

Part of the problem for older devices to get upgraded to 4.x is not so much RAM or processor type but more down to internal memory. ICS usually requires re partition of system memory and this can be difficult to do via OTA updates. I think that Rogers in Canada managed to brick 50% of users HTC handsets doing this. Most modern phones have ample internal storage.

LG Optimus 2x (if it ever happens - see my other thread)
Sony Ericsson Experia Arc LT15i
Google Nexus S (let down by limited memory IMO)
Samsung Galaxy X Extreme (a tad more than what I would ideally like to pay)

Plus any others that catch my eye.I am looking on the pre-owned market where condition is an obvious factor, but what I am after is something that may well have been approacing the premium end a couple of years ago but have now been superceded in what is an obviously rapidly changing market.

I am checking out the reviews on Techradar and elsewhere - and consider the following quantities key, clear screen with decent size standard fonts, ease of navigation, decent camera and flash, good signal, decent battery life and as its a phone foremost any offering that has negative comments will be ruled out.

I have ruled out the mini phones as being too small and to be honest am not that keen on ultra thin ones either. I have no specific brand loyalty although have found my Sony Ericsson is only having to be replaced owing to obsolence rather than there being anything wrong with it.

These are of course all issues I have been through with upgrading Windows OS and I quickly learned that spec is the best way of insuring that you get a decent life out of the hardware. It just surprises me that unlike in PC land where you are told whether or not something will be too advanced for your hardware, this just does not seem to be the case with smartphones
