Classic, non-cgi'd car chases
Not seen a thread on this subject for a while.
Kind of thinking of the lesser known or even unknown car chases from older movies here...this would be a good example, from The Hidden... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHoIB...eature=related And I also have to confess to having a liking for real old-fashioned 70's car chases from 70's movie like these ones... Blazing Magnum - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P9BvD4hzio and The Seven Up's - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vACWV5sRcY And this one from 80's comedy Short time that is just bat shit crazy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE2i08S3YeY |

The Hidden is a little gem of a movie. Alien comes to earth, inhabits bodies, likes eating unhealthy food, listening to loud heavy metal, and driving Ferrari's!
Ronin is a very good example of a more recent movie that 'kept it real'. No CGI, some great driving, and very well photographed. |

Always loved the Citroen 2CV chase in For Your Eyes Only - briiliant reverse driving and a neat little jump towards the end. Also, being Bond, there's some good humour in it with a classic Roger Moore eyebrow moment.

Bullitt deserves a mention, I love the car chases in that.

To a lesser extent, the chase at the end of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was pretty good as well. |

The Blues Brothers- you can't mention car chases without thinking of that film!

The French Connection, Vanishing Point and Death Race. I was going to say Hooper but rather than CGI I think they used little model cars at one point..

I'm trying to think about something I read about The French Connection car chase, something like they destroyed a load of real cars etc but i don't think it's that, does anyone know what i'm trying to think of?

A couple have been mentioned. The Blues Brothers and Ronin.
Another great one though is from a little known movie called Short Time. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100604/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE2i08S3YeY |

Some of the French connection chase was done on the spot - the production team closed off the side streets as necessary. At one point, the stunt driver hit a parked car and they ended up paying to have it repaired. The same thing happened in Bullitt as well.

Ronin is easily the best car chase, even better than the CGI ones.
I didn't mind the Bond car chase in Quantum of Solace, but te photography was poor. |

Yeah, The Blues Brothers was fantastic! All those giant American cars crushing up like tin cans.

The Silencers (obscure sci/fi action film from PM Entertainment) has a superb truck/car/helicopter chase the culminates in the car flying through the air and smashing straight through the helicopter. It's jaw-dropping to watch since it was done for real and far better than the similar stunt in Live Free Or Die hard. Then again PM Entertainment films are chock-full of outstanding car chases, some of which just go on and on for ages.

I'm surprised no ones mentioned the original The Italian Job.
Another vote for Bullit, The Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit and I'd also like to add The Gumball Rally, The Great Race and Monte Carlo Or Bust, and the Dirty Harry series normally had a pretty decent car chase plus TV shows The Sweeney and Starsky and Hutch. |

Have to mention To Live And Die In LA as well.
For a long time this was my favorite, but I guess Ronin may have overtaken it now. I guess by todays standards it probably looks a little dated, but it was fairly innovative for the time. It was one of the first films to use a specially designed rig that the actors could sit in, which could move around on a gimbal on the back of a flatbed, giving the impression that the actors were not only driving, but also dodging oncoming traffic. It also utilised in-car cameras to give an exciting POV element to the chase. I believe it may also have introduced another car-chase cliche, the one where a car drives through narrow lane with a lot of big lorries parked up, weaving in and out of them...I have seen that one used a few times since. But what I liked most about it was it is one of the few car chases ever that actually advances the story, it has plot going on. It's not just a car chase for the sake of it...
Spoiler
Plus Friedkin also managed to show us what is going on inside the heads of Petersen and Pankow during the chase...with Petersen equating the adrenalin rush of the chase with his penchant for bungee jumping off bridges, and Pankow obviously deeply regretting getting involved in the whole caper in the first place. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ_39lxlDAg |

But glad you mentioned The Great Race and Monte Carlo or Bust, because there are a lot of older movies or movies set in the past with good car chase sequences. Another good example of this would be It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World...some excellent driving sequences i9n what is essentially one long chase movie...good to see those big old fashioned American cars hairing around corners, chased by the old black and whites... |

The chase at the end of The Bourne Supremacy was one of the best ever in my opinion. So good that I actually felt car-sick watching it in the cinema!
