I don't care if we never get any of those channels listed above if we get HD versions of the ones we already have.
Certainly, HD programmes are very important to those of us with large screens. The picture quality just isn't that good in SD.

Virgin Media getting access to these channels is down to Sky letting them have them.

And why the need for a news channel in HD? It is only news after all.

I thought Sky had to let them have them? It's the price that may be the issue.

No not the HD channels, and that requirement to give other providers wholesale access may be ending.

Forum friend Media boy is reporting on his 'Coming Soon to Virgin TV' cable forum thread that by:

31st July: BT will takeover ESPN, ESPN HD and ESPN America on Virgin Channels 529, 530 and 531 from Today.

31st July: ESPN to close ESPN Classic on Virgin Channel 533 by Today.

This sounds like good news <fingers crossed>

It's not news, he's saying that BT take over ESPN at the end of July, that's common knowledge already. He lists the channels on VM currently operated by ESPN, that doesn't mean that BT will be making these channels available to VM. Until a contract is agreed it's still just "wait and see".

Great to see NHK on VM now. Certainly a much better addition than TLC.

Assuming that you can tell the difference on your TV between SD and HD, why on earth wouldn't you want the news in HD? What a strange comment!

I honestly could not give a crap about HD, I only have the HD pack because I get Sky Sports F1 as part of it.

But then my TVs are not large, and the 42" Plasma in the living room is not HD either. Whilst house sitting for a family member who has a 50" TV but only SD Sky that some of the channels looked really poor, but not unwatchable though.

It's an old Philips 42pf5520d/10 we were given by family of our next door neighbour. The only thing wrong with it is there is a small blue line down the right side of the screen, but you don't notice it unless you focus on it.
Still does what we need it to do so we have never replaced it.

It does have a DVI input which I use for PC input so it would probably support HD, but I have never tried.

Ahh right, we'll im buggered, they do exist then. Yes DVI is the PC standard for digital Video, it can carry audio as well but in a non standard way. I suspect though if you use a HDMI to DVI converter it will fail. Since HDMI introduced HDCP content lock. You'd need a box that you can acquire on ebay that converts HDMI to DVI and has the HDCP in.

As you say though if you are not fussed then just stay as it is

edit:

your DVI slot is combi, takes DVI, VGA and Component if you use a component to VGA then VGA to DVI adapter.

Interesting set though.

I originally had a DVI to VGA cable for my computer, that broke so I replaced it with a DVI to HDMI cable instead.

Glad I did as the VGA output on my laptop would not give the correct aspect ratio on the TV, where as via the HDMI output it does.

How come the News channel NHK World is only in the XL Pack, is it because it is a HD channel without any SD Variant?

Just tweeted by Jake Humphrey >>>> I wish I could tell you all something that will make lots of you very, very happy...but sadly I can't for the next few hours #WatchThisSpace'

BT Sport channels for VM perhaps or am I reading too much into this?
