However their fibre product was funded by them - how would Sky feel if BT removed their fibre offering to them?

New Channels
Quote:
I thought the whole point of selling the Flextech channels to Sky was to allow Virgin Media access to the channels that Sky were holding out on as part of the deal then they went and launched Sky Atlantic right after that and pulled the same stunt they tried with their other channels previously, in trying to get Virgin Media to pay an inflated price to show the channel.
Sky has a habit of negotiating very low deals to carry other channels and then asking for a fortune for their own channels. There should be a government imposed cap on channel charges and the major TV carriage companies should have easy access to all major channels for a fair price. |

I really do hope we get some new channels and at least some HD ones included, but alas I don't think we will.
Admittedly, the link below does state that it's subject to change, but considering The Africa Channel is on there, it doesn't look hopeful. The guide is from 04/10/12 http://www.virginmedia.com/customers...nnel-guide.pdf |

So your saying because they sold there tv a few years ago to sky, thats o.k for them to stand still and stagnate, and wait for sky to throw them scraps, because thats all sky will give them now.
What a way to run a buisness, stand stiil and do nothing! It won't last. BT is now on the scene; they have bought the ESPN share of the football rights as well as the rugby rights in one fell swoop and it seems to me they are planning to launch channels of their own next year. BT have wads of notes and they can afford to give Sky a run for their money. The market for TV channels will open up in a relatively short period of time and Sky will start to see that their practice of buying stuff exclusively starts to work against them. BT will force them into a different position, which will be good for all of us, including Sky satellite customers themselves. BT will be a completely different kind of operator to that of Sky and the increased competition will force Sky into abandoning their unfair practices. |

Virgin Media have made a conscious decision to be a buyer, not a supplier, of content. It is only Sky's monopolistic practices that are skewing all of this.

ITV2HD, ITV3HD and ITV4HD are supposed to be coming out on VM during October. Channel 5+1 will also come out within the next few weeks.
Others may well follow soon but we will have to be patient about them. I would love to be proved wrong though. |

I know...I've been following the rumours for months. However, based on the October channel guide from VM I don't think they're coming...just a hunch.
It would not be the first time a channel is not in the Channel Guide pdf and launches on Virgin Media. |

I'd love to see VM add some more European channels to the line-up. Channels such as TVE International, BVN, RAI Uno, TRT Turk, ERT World etc.
The latter two would appeal to the large Greek and Turkish communities in the UK. |

...breaking news, The Africa Channel looks like it's been cancelled.
Media boy said that this was a possibility and it's been taken off my V+ box. Can someone please check their TiVo box for me? |

I'm hoping the same. I don't like to see Sky customers lose out but maybe that's what it will take for them to turn against the current model. If BT buy out a lot of shows and channels they like to see and prevent Sky from showing them it may create enough outcry that Ofcom finally intervenes.

As already posted here Virgin has become buyer of channels, films and other items over the last few years with them selling of last of many channels it held to sky and in the last year it sold it's 50% of UKTV that was with BBC World Wide ltd. That was when we got the last number of channels like Eden HD, Dave HD etc. And few months ago Alibi HD came for the new owners.
Virgin needs to get it's act together and use adverts more on when new channels come to there services and also they need to make sure new channels that join change there channel adverts with channel numbers as many channels that come to Virgin over the years still put EPG numbers of sky and others, without virgin. If there are selling them self to customers as full package of Digital media then better channel line up is needed, as said they are not only digital tv platform in town now with many still adding channels and other objects.... With many reports online saying that virgin are in talks over the last few years, I would love to know are these people being paid by the hour and the word of the day ???? ITV three sister HD channels were in talks from day one of them being posted by ITV bosses and other channels too. With So many main national channels cutting back with more repeats then in the past and even repeating on sister channels after wards, TV customers need help in finding shows that are not a repeat these days and more channels would / maybe give some help ? Just hope that with darker nights and many people not able pay for a going out with the UK closing down sale, virgin could be a winner by selling them self better? |

I agree that Virgin need to move with the times, and they have done this with the Tivo. Staying ahead of the game will always be difficult, but I really don't think new subscribers will flock to Virgin simply because they carry (for example), Atlantic. For me, Virgin have the edge over any other provider with their catch up service, music on demand, and series catch up. |

So, returning to the thread title, is there any confirmation that the ITV HD channels are coming this month? Or indeed that we are even going to get any new channels in Oct?
I thought the ITV HD channels were a coming for sure but now I'm not so sure, shouldn't we be hearing something official by now since it is actually October now? Whilst in general I think VM have got a lot of things right over the last couple of years (the Tivo box, broadband speed doubling and not charging a premium for HD content), I do think it is about time they introduced some new channels to the service as it seems that 2012 has been a pretty quiet year for new channel launches on VM. Of course the current offering isn't bad by any means, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't continue to acquire new channels as their competitors will continue to do so. I should clarify that by new channels I mean genuinely new channels i.e. not currently on VM in any form (some more music channels would be good for when on demand is having issues) and HD versions of existing channels (I'd be happy for either, or a mix). |

MEDIABOY confirms the ITV HD channels are definitely launching in October, I don't believe anything official has been mentioned but he knows the score.

Well get a move on there's a double bill of EUFA Europa League on ITV4 tonight! ....And my team Spurs will prob be one of em.........
And while I'm at it get the Virgin TV Anywhere app out, still only got Virgins "coming soon" answer to everything....ITV2 HD just tends to have native content that has been on ITV1 HD anyway. Still, the upscaling makes them worth the while, as we all know ITV's PQ on SD broadcasts are, to put it bluntly, lamentable. They'll be a good addition. |

Also having ITV2-4 in HD adds more value to VMs TV package as in SD they add little to no value really (other than convenience of them being there) as anyone with an aerial can get them for nowt on Freeview but the HD versions will likely not be FTA for some time (if ever). |
